Pretty cruel of UCLA if they didn't let Brosnan know until a few days before his year-long contract expired. There is almost no time left for the coach or the athletes to seek other opportunities before school starts at most colleges for the Fall.
I don't think it will be easy for UCLA to find a top tier coach. Housing is extremely expensive around Westwood and commuting on the 405 and Santa Monica Freeways is a nightmare. It is an urban environment with few soft training surfaces nearby and the bar is quite high for acceptance into the school, even for athletes. So that limits the number of potential recruits.
It's a shame that UCLA, one of the top ranked public universities in the country, has been unable to produce competitive track and cross-country teams over the last 3 decades, given the depth of high school talent that emerges in So Cal each year.
