I'm disappointed. I really wanted to see him up against Kipchoge in Berlin or back in Valencia chasing the WR/racing Cheptegei. Kiptum debuted in 2:01 and Cheptegei is in the same group, so it's not inconceivable that he could drop a really fast debut (though I doubt 2:02 is even in the cards). We could've had a mindblowing race where Kiptum and Kipchoge both smashed the WR in Berlin in the leadup to the Olympics, but instead we'll get to see if Kipchoge can break the WR in Berlin, and we'll get to see if Kiptum can break the WR in Chicago.
The sport needs more top athletes racing each other, and my least favorite part about the marathon is that the structure of WMMs actively works against that. There's only so much money to go around for appearance fees, and there's 6 majors (+ Valencia now) every year, so the top athletes are all split among different races. Don't get me wrong, I love WR attempts and fast races, but it's very rare that 2 athletes are in WR shape at the same time, and the fact that they won't race each other is bittersweet.
