This is literally what people mean when they talk about Toxic Masculinity, and it shouldn't be celebrated. Sad, because usually the Scandinavians are ahead of us on these issues.
I am not in need of a pacemaker, rojo. I am the pacemaker. A guy steps onto the track and gets carried to a fast time and you think that of me? No. I am the one who runs!
It was definitely Rojo who asked that question. Rojo has several dumb tropes that he likes to wheel our regularly. You can play a drinking game with them - take a shot every time he mentions:
1. 800m times for 1500m runners
2. "East African genetics"
3. Baseless suspicions of non-American athletes
4. Jakob is vulnerable without pacers
The man needs to spend some time developing new takes
I'm not ready for a world where Jakob doesn't win the 1500.
Not because he lost. The winner had to be better on the day, so in any case that's well deserved.
No, purely because we'd never hear the end of it. Every LRC production longer than 2 paragraphs of text or 2 minutes of video would make sure to remind us that in 2023 rojo was right.
Would Jacob like some diamond league races be run without pacers in order to prep for WC and OG races?
Does he really need unpaced DL races? He's not exactly inexperienced in championship races. He races more than any other top guy on the circuit. He turns up to Euro champs, Euro XC, World Indoors, Euro Indoors. He's not one of those guys who hides away in training camps for most of the season, then runs a TT before going back to training before World's.

First two definitions when you google "toxic masculinity" are:
"Toxic masculinity is a term that has been gaining traction in the past few years. This term refers to the dominant form of masculinity wherein men use dominance, violence, and control to assert their power and superiority."
"Toxic masculinity refers to the notion that some people's idea of "manliness" can perpetuate domination, homophobia, and aggression. It derives from emotional deprivation/denial of emotions and the person's need to dominate."
I don't see his comment implying dominance, violence, control of others, homophobia, or aggression. I don't think his comment is suggestive of of emotional deprivation or denial of emotions, and I don't think he appears to have a desire to dominate others (except maybe insofar as sports inherently have a winner and a loser, but doesn't that apply to womens' sports, too?).
Amusing thread. Given that Jakob said he's done racing until Worlds, a smart follow up would've been about Zurich on August 31. WR attempt there for sure. Brussels the following week too.
It was a good interview. Maybe next time Lets run can take the opportunity to ask a better question with some insight. Same for the message boards as well.

Jakob could’ve also answered: “Did Tim Cheruiyot need a pace-free DL race in Doha for his buildup? No he just ran his own race and destroyed us in the Final.” Just because El Guerrouj was insecure about setting his own pace doesn’t mean Jakob has to be.

bad take.
there is a serious hate on from these one or two same posters in the Jakob threads. Same guys from the Nordas thread. when he gets busted go ahead and hate on him. but until then, have the tiniest bit of self awareness that what you’re saying reflects more on your overclocked world view, than it does on reality. take a few deep breaths, watch any other sport for 5 minutes, then come back and appreciate what you have in running.
and just to cap things off, a few more statements that would fall into your special definition of toxic masculinity:
“To hell with love of country - I compete for myself”
“If anybody wants to beat me, let them run a world record”
“Somebody may beat me, but they are going to have to bleed to do it”
“I used to say, 'Hey, man, what kind of a stupid question is that?' to a newspaperman asking me heavy things right after a race when I'm still in an emotional state.”
