The good old times when Edmonton was syringe free, just like letsrun was free of weird posters.
I was there - Edmonton did a great job of putting on the meet! Big crowds too. Went to Old Strathcona (sp?) for post meet beers! EPO was the hot PED at that time - suspicions surrounded a female Soviet distance star - I’m not sure whether she competed or not?
Edmonton was a great host city for world champs. 2001 was my senior year of college. A friend and I drove from Houston to Edmonton via the Colorado Rocky Mountains and Yellowstone national park. We stayed in camp sites along the way and got in plenty of altitude training when we found somewhere to stop each day. We stayed in Edmonton a few nights to watch the meet. I sat in the stands next to Abdi and got him to autograph my ticket. I still have it on my shelf. I saw Dimitry Markov win the pole vault one night and watched a young Craig Mottram run in the 1500m heats. After the meet we drove back to Houston via Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper. The trip took 4 weeks and was a lot of fun. I hope Edmonton hosts another championship again.
