Wightman and Tim C, if I'm correct, the only two active sub-1:44/sub-3:30 men. Asbel Kiprop said years ago, Tim C doesn't have great final 50m speed. IMO, it's too late in Tim C's career to develop late race change of pace.
Jakob jumping for joy that he doesn't have to deal with a 1:43 guy who beat him anymore
Jakob could not care less who he has to race. He’s out there time after time racing anybody and everybody who shows, and each time he runs his own race and dares them to beat him at his own game. So far this summer, nobody has, and that’s not likely to change. If Jakob has any thoughts or emotions around Wightman’s scratch, it’s more likely to be one of disappointment that he won’t have a chance to take down the person who upset him last year, but most likely, Wightman’s future absence barely registers. Jakob is totally locked in about his own trip and he’s supremely confident that if he executes, he’s beating anybody running today.
We have mind readers here. I am very impressed. How are you able to read minds?

Man, what did Wightman do to himself? Is this like a Morgan McDonald issue or more like Donovan Brazier?
He fractured his foot doing plyos in a training camp earlier this year. He's been trying to get fit for world's since then but it looks like he didn't rehab it properly. Injuries then start to stack up. It's a shame for him, everyone wants to see the champion try and defend their title.
People saying he's unlucky because he doesn't get to be world champ for 2 years: I don't agree as I think worlds should take place every year except Olympic years. Track needs a major every year, an event where we crown the best int he world. Off years are aimless for so many athletes, US athletes in particular as they don't have second titer international competitions that are meaningful, like Euros or Commonwealths

I’m not reading his mind, I’m listening carefully to what he has to say during his many interviews. He’s really pretty clear and straightforward about how he views his competition. Of course, he’s not yet on the record about Wightman’s withdrawal yet, so sure, I’m extrapolating a bit, but he’s not at all focused on who he is racing, only where’s he’s at in terms of performance.

"One of Jakob's biggest threats" aka "One hit wonder"
most 1500mChampions are one hit wonders,
When was the last time you saw a back to back champion in the 1500m at any level?
My mind goes back to Indoors with Tefera but that's it.
the 1500m is my fave event because of its roller coaster nature of one hit wonders
Even Jakob thus far only has one 1500m title like the rest of em
Give Wightman his due
But Wightman didn't win another global title, 11 european titles or is/was winning almost every race he started. Wightman didn't even manage to win gold at the ec in munich last year.

Jakob says what he wants others to hear. Just like everyone else. It may or may not be an entirely accurate reflection of his innermost thoughts.
Freak accident in the gym. He explains the accident (and his recovery process thus far) on his youtube channel if you're curious. Doesn't seem to be a very injury prone athlete when looking at the entirety of his career.

Sounds like you're a bit of a mind reader yourself!
The Jakob-Jake grudge match was gonna be one of the highlights of worlds. Shame.
Agreed, but look on the bright side: It's a better storyline for the Olympics :)
As long as Wightman is back into peak shape next year, the 1500 is gonna be incredibly exciting. I'm really hoping Hobbs, Teare, or Hocker break 3:30 this year just to set it up even more. GB has a world champ and an Oly bronze medalist, Norway has a 3:27 and a 3:29 guy, and the US has a 3:29 guy with a bunch of guys bubbling in the 3:31-32 area. When was the last time the 1500 has so much depth outside of Africa? Even discounting times, there's so many European/American/Oceania runners at the front of DL races. Are we gonna see a similar trend in longer events soon?
I do find it strange that some of you are not intelligent enough to understand that speaking what you want others to hear is what speaking is….it concerns me that some of you like the poster “lord Jakob” are not bright enough to grasp this.
