I know you’re not asking about Wilson Kipketer but he would have a chance vs Jakob at 1200m. Kipketer ran 3:59 for a mile when he was just a 1:45 runner at age 20. Kipketer probably could have run more like 3:55 when he was a 1:41.11 runner. This would be enough to stay with Jakob and then possibly outkick him at 1200m.
kipketer the terrible underachiever was pumping out 2:18 k reps for fun, he surely would've thrashed anyone past or present over 1000/1200.
(ftr, i don't think he really did the 5x1000m in 2:18 he says but if he's being straight with us...)
Killing time on Instagram and it served up this video:https://www.instagram.com/reel/CpnW0G-IjEH/?igshid=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ==Wilson Kipketer saying that he used to do 5*1k with 5min recovery in 2:18.I'm seriously taken aback. Am...
Even Nick Symmonds who ran like a 3:34 couldn’t win against Jakob. Rudisha has a 1500 m pB in the 3:40s. 1k at 2:19 already says he won’t win, Jakob could run a 2:16 probably.
Clearly this is a thread of fanboys of Jakob.
If Coe run 2:12 (old WR) in the 1000m, you think Rudisha will be limited to 2:19 in the 1000m?
Another good "sponsoring" thread for Jakob in LRC.
He’s right, it’s crazy to think Rudisha was only capable of 2:19 at his best. He ran exactly one 1000m and it was the second-to-last race of his career, wedged between two 1:44.90 800s. What could he have run when he was capable of 4 seconds faster over 800? I think it’s likely 2:13ish.
There’s a lot of hyperbole in this thread. I think Jakob would win at 1200m, but Rudisha would still be in it with 100m to go. Rudisha wouldn’t have fallen apart as soon as he went over 800; he was running ~55 mpw in the base period and ~40 mpw during the racing season, as cited by Colm O’Connell in this article:
"I asked Colm O’Connell (Coach of David Rudisha and many sub 1:45 800m runners) the old question that first comes to mind for many: “How much milage does David Rudisha do?” and he answered with “It’s hard to count, as we trai...
He also says his longest runs in training were “around 50 minutes or 13km” which implies he would do 8 milers at ~6:15 pace for an over-distance workout. I also remember reading about him doing 5ks in training in 16 minutes and change.
I think prime Rudisha wins at 1k by 10+ meters, and Jakob wins at 1200 by 10+ meters.
I would hazard to say that in a thousand years, nobody who can run 1:40.9 will only be capable of 2:19 for 1k. Seb Coe, as mentioned by Temp Account, would definitely beat Rudisha in a K but he’d also most likely be considered the greatest 1000m runner of all time.

Hahah wow I missed that thread. I find this hard to believe though.
One of the most legendary workout stories I ever heard was El Guerrouj running 5x1000m in 2.20 with 5 minutes rest. The most legendary thing about it was that he did it close to midnight, behind a locked gate at the stadium in Ifrane, his training base. And I heard this story from a former UK international miler that they let train with him for a few seasons.
That’s the kind of workout I would expect from a 3.26.00/3.43.13/7.23.09 runner.
To imagine an 800m runner - albeit one that can run 1.41.11, being able to better that workout (considerably) is just not believable. That sort of workout is an elite miler/3000m workout (like WR level) - not from an 800m runner that never attempted a mile after his youth and might have run 3.53/4 for a mile at his absolute prime (which btw was still seen as a fast performance in that era).

I think Donathan Brazier would be interesting. He's ran a 45 400m and 3:35 for 1500m closing in a 52. He has more 1500m strength than Rudisha and Kipketer. I wanna go with JI on this, but at 1200m I think it's very close. Thoughts?

We do not know that Brazier had more 1500m strength than Kipketer. JRinaldi once posted that Kipketer had 3:30 ability. I am not sure about that but when you run 1:41.11 you may indeed have 3:30-3:35 ability even if you don’t contest the event. We just don’t know and that is why those of you who say Kipketer would have zero chance vs Jakob at 1200m do not know what you’re talking about.

I love Kipketer - I know Rudisha is the greatest ever (can't not be with 2 x OG and the WR in an Olympic final) but I still maintain Kipketer is the best 800m runner ever who should have run 1.40.6/7 long before Rudisha (he ran 1.41.11 going through in 48.3 for gods sake).
But despite all of this, he also has absolutely no chance vs Jakob over 1200m. None.
Argue for Kipketer, there are zero here. You can argue Kipketer should have run 1.40,6. But, could he front run 1.41 solo in a final? Doubtful, so then we could assume that Rudisha could run faster than 1.40,6 and therefore is the best 800m ever.
Regarding the 1200m, I fully support you, neither Rudisha nor Kipketer would have any change against a 3.27 runner in the 1200m.
