Just to put things in perspective, Leo and Lex were 2nd and 5th in the greatest HS mile field of all time, RUNNING THEIR OFF-EVENT. Big things to come once they're running in their true events. Overall, there's absolutely nothing to feel bad about, everybody had a great race.
Simeon Bierbaum is the king of High School Running, he has wicked prs in every event he races and goes for the win in every race. Recently hes been on a stre...
Jim Ryun and Alan Webb are obviously 1-2 all time high school milers. Birnbaum now the clear 3.
I'll get out my calculator to double check but I'm pretty sure that a 3:34.36 is ~ 3.57 faster than 3:37.93.
I'm also pretty sure that Kessler's HS 3:34.36 was faster than any NCAA athlete had ever run 1500 at the time. Birnbaum's 3:37.93 would be top 10 in this year's NCAA however, so he is really really good.
Why do some people need to diminish the Youngs instead of just simply elevating Birnbaum? Birnbaum deserves all the accolades. But both Youngs ran well relative to the competition.
Birnbaum 4:02.22
Leo Young 4:02.58
Rocky Hansen 4:03.63
Connor Burns 4:04.24
Lex Young 4:04.60
Carter Cutting 4:05.38
Collin Boler 4:06.01
Hunter Jones 4:06.93
Tyrone Gorze 4:08.50
William Heslam 4:09.03

Birnbaum was 1st and Burns was 4th, in the greastest mile field of time, RUNNING THEIR OFF-EVENT, because Birnbaum is higher up on the 2M all time list (2nd) as is Burns (3rd behind Birnbaum and Lukas V) and (2nd, formerly 1st) in the 5000m.
Just incredible depth! Fun watching these guys the past couple years. Along with the top few that are being mentioned most, guys like Gorze and even little old Iowan Heidesch had impressive senior seasons. Best of luck to all the seniors and what comes next for them. We'll be watching!!!
Believe me, there are always going to be kids the same age step out of their shadows in the next 2 years as well. Just didnt develop at the same time. Im guessing a few will fade away as well. But what a year!!! Just so many opportunities to see the best kids run head to head all over the country. Glad to see sponsorship step up and help this happen. I mean, its obvious it serves a market of teenagers and younger but the end result is hopefully going to produce World & Olympic medals and compete better at that level than we have.
In the meantime, shoot for the appropriate national teams if its right for you and then take a much needed recovery period. Dont get too wrapped up in being world beaters your freshman year. Slow cooking is better!
Tops for next year????

To expand on this I think everyone should be cautious about predicting where athletes will be in the next few years. Yeah, off this great season Birnbaum looks like he'll be awesome next year and the years to follow. Of course he looks promising but injuries and illnesses can set athletes back. I have no way of predicting anyone here or a few of the other top runners who weren't in this race, like Heidesch, Kipyego and Matsatsa. I also think that Carter Cutting, who has excellent 800 speed and didn't really focus on the mile, could emerge at BYU.

Cutting was who I was referring to as stepping out of the shadows. There will be others. He is tough and has an extra gear or two that would be hard to match. He just walked away from Gorze in the 1500 at state.
Definitely will be a separation of tallent. Best chances for guys like Gorze and Heidesch is XC, 5 & 10k. Wouldnt be surprized to see Birnbaum headed for steeple. All of the others probably 5k.

Daniel Simmons.
Just ran another 8:41 2-mile to win NBON . . . following his 8:41 at Brooks PR then a 4:09 mile at NBON yesterday . . .
However, no where near the depth of talent returning for the 2023-2024 hs season. Simmons will be the favorite in every race he runs next year save possibly an indoor or outdoor national mile championship race. Could very well run a 2-mile faster than 8:34 as well as break Lex Young's 13:34/5k record . . . but would have to do it on his own.
The talent displayed by this season's senior class was beyond belief. One for the books.
The smile on the the Young brothers face at the end of this race is priceless. Genuine and he doesn’t seem to be hurting. Good things to come from these kids.
