Was this the fastest anyone has ever run the last mile of a 5K in a sub-12:50 race?
Did a bit of research and the answer to your question is yes.
Source please, with precise data?
I remember other impressive results from Bekele era when last 5000 of a 10,000 was under 13:00, but, sorry, can't remember the precise race.....reminders please?
Ecto = Ectomorph (person with thin body structure, characterized by difficulty in gaining muscle and body mass). This type of body structure is common in East Africa whereas West Africa has more mesomorph body structures, shorter and naturally muscular.
Yomif looks like an extreme ectomorph 1.86/58kg (6.1/128). I'm guessing he has a six-pack though.
Not sure how women in the West would evaluate a guy like Yomif in terms of attractiveness but I'm thinking they would possibly be turned off by his extreme thinness. It's an unusual appearance in the generally over fed West.
Kudos to Yomif for sticking to his guns and obviously adhering to his abnegation and discipline to reach the top of the world as he is the King of the 5,000 meters or one of them, at the moment. I also get the impression that he's a bit of an individualist in Ethiopia because I've seen videos of him training on his own rather than in the groups. Also many of us remember him fighting with another Ethiopian runner, was it Barega? - in a 5,000 meter race. Yomif yanked the runner by his vest, and impeded his progress, dramatically.
Caveat, I don't think he'll win the 5,000 meters in Budapest but if I'm wrong I'll be delighted to be wrong.

I believe Kejelcha tried to pull down Barega’s shorts so I am not at all sure that Yomif is trying to look attractive for the ladies…if you catch my drift Ghostmonster…

So I checked all the world record splits for 5,000m.
Also checked all other sub 12:50 and this was the fastest.
There was the Paris DL meet 2012 had a fast finish but this was faster.
Here's the pre-Cheptegei WR splits courtesy of a well-known running website.

Ecto = Ectoplasm - the stuff Ghost1 is made up of.
In a thrilling race, world record holder Kenenisa Bekele beats his renowned competitors at Weltklasse Zürich 2006 at 5000m with an incredibly fast final lap ...
malnourished no. a finely tuned machine with every energy source calibrated with the specifications of a race car. light, maneuverable and optimized. sure, things can break on cars and people but optimized to perform. Happy Father’s Day
Great run. Kiplimo and Jakob could realistically beat him still this year and it would only take one more runner to also beat him to miss a medal. Being top 3 in the world is hard. I assume Jakob will do the 1500/5000 double again and Kiplimo the 10000/5000 double. Yomif reasonably will only run the 5000 and can have a slight advantage

I'd love to see Yomif grab the Gold in Budapest in the 5,000 meters but I fear for his last hundred meters as historically he's often been run down and beaten in the home straight that if I'm wrong in this assessment I'll be very happy to see him win the World Championship gold medal because he's been at it for a long time and deserves the best. I feel like he's the Maverick in the Ethiopian team and I've always had a soft spot for Mavericks. These Mavericks have iconoclastic tendencies which are not easy to duplicate.
I think Yomif can race a little too aggressively but this year he is striking a better balance. It is easy to say “why not wait until the last 200” to strike the front. At his size and stride length, he can’t maneuver/shift gears as easily as Cheptegei, Krop, Barega et al. His best move is to get up front within the last 2 laps and just make sure to save a little extra for the final 100.
Having watched that race he doesn't yet have the mindset of a true champion, and as such he's holding himself back.
He looked around so many times. This makes me think he could be stronger mentally, like Jakob for example. His coach should work on this and it can only benefit his race finishes.
You criticized Kejelcha for looking around a lot and used Jakob as an example of what he should do? Have you ever watched him race?

Yomif looks worried when he looks around. And a lot too, and it costs him. Jakob less so. If I was criticizing, I meant it constructively.

Yomif displays some level of anxiety in races, impeding his finish, up till now. Hopefully that will change this summer. Looking at his behaviour etc he comes across as an introvert with mild neurotic tendencies and this was corroborated by those who interacted with him when he ran under Al Salazar. He's enigmatic. He's more like a Nordic in behavior and demeanour.
The other day when he ran 12:41. 73 I was blown away after the finish - there was absolutely no reaction from him at all it was like he was finishing a training session! No expression of joy or elation - it was like nothing happened, unbelievable!
such an amazing last lap (53:02) for a 12:48 race. The two laps prior were quite slow though (68,67). Even if they had done 63s for those laps and a bit slower last lap, they could have gone close to WR that day
