More likely the fact that the UNM athletic program has been in financial dire straights for years. Although they did finally finish their new athletic training facility and moved their athletes out of the tent.

Nah it would be for his contract $ not facilities. He had all he needed facility wise to produce elite collegiate distance runners in ABQ. Which he did.
Lol, yeah, neither are great. But parts of ABQ are nice, and the trails, dry climate, sunshine almost year-round, and altitude make for a running mecca. L’ville is just, well, not great.
Sport-specific, the SE regional in xc is far easier to qualify to nationals out of than the Mountain regional.
Never understood that sentiment. The South East typically gets it autos and occasionally gets an at large. Why is it easier? I don't believe there are Mountain Region teams who fail to get an at large, that would beat the both the SE autos on an annual basis.
The system is pretty good at getting at least 25 of the top 30 teams. The only region where you could make this argument is the South Central.
3rd in SE with at-large points isn’t as difficult as the same in Mtn. I do agree that South Central is even softer.

Facilities are for more than that, they’re for impressing fickle teenaged minds in the recruiting process. Better pay is certainly a big factor.
New Mexico's top 2 women are in the portal but unlikely they go to Louisville. They probably love Joe but don't want to use their last year of eligibility rebuilding weak team.
They will end up at OK State, NC State or Colorado.
lolz... for some reason the thread about who is in the portal from UNM was deleted.
I don't understand why that happens because some folks actually have access to the portal.
Anyhow, so this doesn't get deleted I'll just say this... 3 of their top 5 females are in the portal. Truth is if they all follow Joe, Louisville will be an instant power...

At New Mexico he had to rely on international talent since distance running isn’t that big in NM. At Louisville he’d be in a region of the country with more talent that he could reasonably recruit too. If he can still pull international athletes there like he did at NM, then he should be able to make it even better.
I feel sorry for Albuquerque. even The locals don’t like it.
Thanks for your sympathy!
Sincerely, -local who loves it here
For running it is one of the best places in the world. Trails in the foothills of Sandia mountains, East side mountain trails, by the rio grande , along tramway , la Luz trail ensure you could run 100 + miles a week on dirt from 5000 to 11000 feet all within the city and sun for 300+ days a year. also when I was there in the 90’s there wasn’t a week you didn’t run into a world class athlete training next to you.

Joe isn’t interested in developing local talent. He’ll fill his team with international and grad students. He did it at Butler prior to NM. Butler was geographically similar to Louisville.
