Here is the footage of that race. Hood runs 53.65 (!!) for the first lap, I would guess Lagat is like 4 meters back so maybe 54.2. 1.50.08 at 800m (already a massively inefficient pacing job there compared to what is possible now with w/light) but the telecast for some reason backs off so if we assume they held the approximate spacing Lagat would have been say 1.50.6. 1200m is 2.46.10 - Lagat is now right on Hicham so maybe 2.46.3 and then that means a 40.0 closeout.
So summary he goes 54.2, 56.4, 55.7, 40.0
Honestly both of these guys should have been under 3.26 that day. They could have been a half second faster through 800m with maybe even less energy cost had the first lap not been so fast (sub 54 is insane).
On the topic of Lagats 800m time, sure it's "officially" 1.46.00 and he claims he could absolutely not have run faster but that's definitely just a classic off the cuff moment of well intended humility. I mean he ran 1.46.8 for the 800m in Athens so when he was in this shape running way under 3.30 it's hard to believe he couldn't run at least 1.45.00 +/- a few tenths either side (and probably most likely under). And I know there was some "stuff" that happened around this time but you still have to have the leg speed and speed endurance to run that fast.
As for Jakobs 800m PR - well again it's a matter of focus. Because even if you asked him to go PR right now he might "only" run 1.45.5 but that's hardly the ceiling of his potential. I have no doubts he could adjust his training for 3 months then run low to mid 1.44's. I don't see how running back to back 52's is much of an issue for him if he really went after it.
Back quickly to El G in 2001, Nico Motchebon (1.43 and Olympic finalist in the 800 in 96) told me a story about El G after this race in Rieti going absolutely ballistic through 1200m going for the record and then totally eating sh-t in the last 200. Maybe some track fan in Italy has it taped on VHS but the footage is absolutely nowhere - out in just under 1.49 and through 1200m in under 2.44 (yes!) before absolutely imploding in the last 200 to run 3.29.08 (and yes this is a different race to the 2002 performance where he was 2.44.75 and ran 3.26.9). Different days huh.
