Re-reading your post, I see that you are asking about getting back into shape, not just running performance.
Maybe what you are doing is not as interesting as it needs to be to keep you engaged. I do know that you do some gym workouts.
Here's the scoop: target exactly what you want to improve. Then tailor your strategy to meet that goal. The answer will depend a lot on what type of conditioning you are seeking. So much so, that it hardly makes any sense to offer suggestions without knowing what you want. And maybe what you want is as simple as just a more interesting (less boring) activity.
Every time I see a fat person I immediately have the urge to go work out. It’s worse if they’re seriously obese and waddling and generally disgusting. So go to your nearest Target or grocery story and observe how disgusting people are. My fat slob of a neighbor just had Chik Fil A delivered. He’s in his 20s and isn’t remotely disabled.

Think about these lyrics.
Each day I live...I want to be...a day to give... the best of me.
I want one moment in time...when I'm more than I thought I could be.
When all of my dreams are a heartbeat away... and the answers all up to me...
Sometimes when I have a hard workout and I'm down to that last, painful interval that I REALLY don't want to run. I don't even think I can run it. When I reach this point I think of this line from One Moment In Time.
"When all of my dreams are a heartbeat away... and the answers all up to me..."
It's rare that I can listen to this video without tearing up. At 3:30, you'll see Carl Lewis in red and white lose the 100m final to Ben Johnson. Johnson would later be stripped of his gold medal for doping. But after hundreds of hours of training, Carl Lewis would have his moment in the sun stripped away. It's enough to make you cry. I tear up every time I watch this video. The moral for us is that life isn't fair. You just do your best.

This was great advice and the only feedback it got was a single downvote. Before doing anything...consider your audience.
Now, in the words of that great philosopher and ex-benzo addict Jordan Peterson: do not compare yourself to others. Compare yourself to who you were the day before.
