Woulda been pretty cool to see him beat a bunch of high school kids.
If not cool, at least funny. The image of a rather large, somewhat lumbering-looking 33-year-old professional runner pacing and then beating high-school kids in some sort of time-trial/race thing would emphasize the farcical nature of pacing in this sport. Here, though, I'm not sure he could have beaten these kids over a full mile, unless they simply ignored him and let him go so they could actually focus on racing each other instead of the ghost of Alan Webb. In that case, you could see one of those rare pacer wins like the famous 1500m victory by pacer Tom Byers over Steve Ovett and the rest of the field in 1981. In any event, I would guess that there was a firm understanding here that Sowinski would not make any attempt to win, and even if he was allowed to win under the agreement, it would be bad for his business to do so.
