The consensus of those here is Matt B is not an elite 100m man. He is a long jumper or 200m man. I don't get the fuss about Matt B and not sprinting well in a 100m dash.
Why would a kid running the fastest 100m time in high school history not be considered an elite 100m man??
Cheer him on when Matt B sprints 100m. In U.S., we need to move away from caring about fasting in high school or best in high school. That has no relevance on Matt B making Team USA.
The point is your ‘consensus’ here has evidently already written him off. If he has been in this forum and read your ’consensus’ postings and they have negatively affected his performance, then consider your ‘consensus’ to be partially responsible if he doesn’t make the Budapest final.

High schoolers shouldn’t be fasting. Growing bodies need nutrients.
He won’t do any impact on the 200m either just double the 100 times 2 and you get your 200 time. He could be in great shape and just taking his training light for a few weeks and off the juice , just because you see a runner dip from 9.9 to 10.3 , it doesn’t mean they’re injured like I said. No need to continuously dump chemicals in your body for months on end especially without having a salary. Furthermore he may have been glowing and a choice was made to just let it go and start again 4 or so weeks before the trials.
That precipitous drop is why I suggested possible injury. Or, maybe he’s sick, or maybe Bela is right, who knows. It makes little sense otherwise. Something’s amiss.
Not trying to be a hater towards the event by any means it just seems weird he jumped really well a couple years ago, then dropped it. Makes me think he's not into it is all. He's still good enough to make some 4x400 teams if his 100/200 prowess doesn't return.
I'm not sure why he still does the 100, he's always just been alright at it compared to the 2. With his 43 split he seems much more like a 200/400 man than a 100 guy.
Oh well, at least he can say he has done some great times and distances should he never improve again.
Bit odd he did well not long ago in indoor season, but less so now. I would have thought outdoor season much more important.
He's obviously dealing with some sort of injury....he ran 20.12 indoors 2 months ago so this run isn't for a lack of ability in an event he's ran 9.98 in before. Too much is made about his race....that's totally irrelevant....speed is speed....you either have it or you don't, and you can't tell me a sub 10 runner lacks it.
We've been spoiled by the past outlier times posted by the Bolts, Blakes, Gays of the world....9.5's and 9.6's aren't normal times, they're exceptional, generational.....9.9/9.8 is the level of most "mortal" world class sprinters, with the occasional elites like Kerley, Bromell, Asafa, dipping below 9.8.....Asafa being the best (technical) sprinter ever, IMO, accounting for his multiple 9.7's.
Boling is potentially a 9.82-9.85/19.6 100M/200M runner under the right circumstances, with a great coach and team....times that can win World and Olympic medals, even golds! He's as good as anyone out there so to suggest he should scrap the 100 because of the colour of his skin or one bad race (possibly due to injury leading up) is totally absurd.
My consensus is he should run the 400. His sprint marks match in spirit to Wariners / VanNieketk
With too much sprinting Boling just gets slower.
ive been saying this forever.
boling's ultimate career goal should be to make an olympic team. thats a dream many never reach.
focus on the 400m and get yourself on the relay squad. you just need to be 6th best. you can go to paris and enjoy the spectacle and have a memory to relish forever.

Potential for 9.8. HA! Whatever you smoking, you should put it down. No potential of doing so without PED. His realistic potential is 9.97 which will be run once under ideal conditions.
