Workout was Mile - tempo mile - 1200 - tempo mile - 800 - tempo mile - 400
4:13 - 5:10 - 3:15 - 5:14 - 1:59 - 5:18 - 54
That workout is really good but nothing I wouldn’t expect from a 3:58/13:37 guy who’s really good at workouts.
After running 3:57 and before running 3:34 Hobbs ran the same workout :
4:23 - 4:58 - 3:14 - 4:48 - 2:05 - 4:46 - 50
Burns is good, hopefully he can run 3:56 like Sahlman last year but I don’t see him breaking the HS record.
Burns opened with a 1600m at sub-hs record 2M pace. He ran pr 2M pace for the 1200. He ran pr mile pace for the 800m, then he still closed at sub-800m pace, so I say that it does indicate he can get that 2M record. 3:53 is too much to expect, but I can see 3:55-56 and 13:30.
Is the 3:15 a typo? Seems weird to go from 3K pace for a 1600 to 5K pace for a 1200, and then mile pace for an 800 and 800 pace for a 400. Everything going down in pace with that exception...3:05 would make more sense.
Not disagreeing with you, but in my experience, the 1200 is commonly run like this (a little slower) bc you’re fresh for the 16, but a little tired/hesitant for the 12. Then, for the 8 and 4 you can push it a little more bc they’re shorter and you can sense finishing the wo a bit more.
Connor Burns, the first high school boy to register a sub-4 mile in 2023, broke the high school national record for 5,000 meters on Saturday in California.

Yeah I mean the Michigan could be run a number of ways. I think the way I presented it is more in line with what physiologically makes sense. Psychologically yeah, doing the 1600 a bit over your head (cuz you’re fresh) and then resting the 1200 a bit is plausible. But I think the coaching point for this one would be Burns should back off on the 16, so he’s progressing throughout the workout on the intervals.
No, he was saying he didn’t think he would, not that he didn’t know he did it
Bingo. I think he’ll get the 2 mile, but fall short in the mile. Assuming Jerry isn’t fired in the next 3-4 years, I could see Burns really thriving under his system.
Agree that 4000 faster than future PR 3000m pace is very impressive.
That was with 3 minutes recovery after each rep. I think the 400m was in 54-55sec. Bob Kennedy did it with him, but slower (3.58 on down). Of course this is a completely different workout than the Michigan (even though it too has a 1600-400 breakdown).
