I just ran Boston with 2 500ml soft flasks with Maurten 320 mix so each flask was the equivalent of 2 gels. Have janji half tights that have pockets big enough to fit them. Worked well but it is quite heavy at the start.
If the race has an elite field with tables why would anyone complain if someone handed it to you? Is someone in the elite field really going to complain that they got beat by someone not in it when they were the ones with the advantage to begin with?
