13:44.83. Actually, it was a good performance considering that he is still building up from some lost training earlier in the year. Hopefully next month or June he can give it another go.
Not terrible but he DID fail to achieve his attempt at breaking Rupps record which was what he wanted this race. Tat being said he could break it by May-June and this run shows some potential of that
Great race by Lex with a 13:44. He should take a shot at the HS 10k record. Seems like he could rattle off 4:34 miles all day, which is the pace it would take to break Rudy Chapa's 28:32.7.
Chapa's record is one that truly astonished me when I first heard it. 1976 was probably the best high school distance running year of the 20th century -- also Salazar, Eric Hulst winning World Junior XC, a bunch of sub-9 2-miles, and more. (In terms of depth anyway. 1964, with Lindgren and Ryun, could certainly make an argument, though arguably Ryun was only middle-distance in high school.)
If Lex can find a 10,000m, I'd love to see him take a shot at it.
Not a bad race, seems he got stuck at the front of the second pack for most of the race. Perhaps if he had gotten in with the lead group he may have been pulled along a little more. Regardless still a great time especially for mid-April running, though it wasn't the result he was hoping for.
. . . If Lex can find a 10,000m, I'd love to see him take a shot at it.
. . . which will not happen.
Both have stated on various podcasts their #1 goal this season is to break Rupp's 13:37/5k HS record . . . then try for Lukas V's 8:29/2 mile hs record if the appropriate race can be set up . . . then, sub-4 miles which they haven't done yet.
However, all hope is not lost . . . Tyrone Gorze is the one who may have Chapa's record in sight . . . he's the high-mileage hs guy this year . . . ran a 29:29.92 last year . . . possible attempts: Soundrunning's TrackFEST on 5/6 or the Portland Track Festival on 6/3 . . .
Strange that Nico isn’t in the first heat considering he has beaten most of the guys that are. Must not be in great shape which, if true, means we might get a race between Lex and Nico. Should be a good one.

Chapa’s 10k record is definitely not something they could do “all day”. 28:32 is a legit, legit performance and especially impressive considering we’re talking about high schoolers (who tend to fall off a lot at the longer distances). If either of the Youngs can break Rupp’s record I’d believe they’d have a shot, but not while in 13:44 shape.

I agree. To those who say - and many have posted here - that it is a soft record and trivial for any top HS mid-D runner, I say 'let's see them do it.' Rupp, who was better at 10k than 5k or anything shorter, tried it while still elegible for HS records. He didn't come close. Neither have any of the NP alumni including Nico. If they could pretty easily break it while Seniors, they could very easily break it as college Freshman after an entire year training specifically for 10k. None have.

Nico hasn't even run a 10,000 yet, so not sure what you are saying

Chapa wasn't just a good hs distance guy, who took a shot at a fast 10k. He trained for it with goal to make the 1976 Olympic trials. His 28:32 at the Drake relays got him that q, along with hs record and at that time world u20 record.
At the trials 13 runners competed in 2 trial heats for spots in a 9 man final. LRCers would be screaming about having heats for 13 runners in a 10k today! Chapa ran 30:36 failing to advance to the final.
The final went:. Shorter (closing in 60 for 27:55), Virgin, Bjorklund, Rogers, Mendoza (28.25). Shorter and Rogers both did only the marathon, so Mendoza went to Montreal. Had Chapa been able to run his 28:32 in the final, he would have been 6th right behind Mendoza.

I’m wondering whether at the end of the season they are going to regret skipping Arcadia etc to run these handful of races. So far I’d say they would. They are still eligible for Brooks and Nike though right? If eligibility isn’t an issue with those races, why wouldn’t they do them?

…and what about Lindgren’s US junior record of 28:06 (from 1965)?

That was a 6 mile race according to his wiki page, 1966 at NCAA meet.
