I take a pretty libertarian viewpoint, so I dont think sports betting should be illegal, but holy hell has it been annoying since its been legalized here. The ads are constant; you cant consume boston sports without being inundated by big papi or edelman hawking draftkings. Even on a national level, you cant watch espn or listen to sports radio without hearing about endless lines and props.

Agree w this. The ads are disgusting & draftkings is a predatory company, preying on problem gamblers. Unfortunately, the way our government works is whoever bribes (er, donates ;)) the most gets to set the rules.
Honestly think this would be incredible for growing the sport*. There are tradeoffs of course, but for getting more eyes and money into the sport, this is a no-brainer.
Parimutuel betting would be awesome too, like exotic horse racing trifectas etc.. pick 6 from the mens/womens 800/1500/5000 etc.. Tons of potential.

Marathons make a lot more sense for betting purposes than a track meet. Far fewer variables for the oddsmakers to deal with. The fact that the athletes only run 2-3 marathons per year lends to confidence you'll get a maximum effort instead of a throwaway.
They could set matchups on one runner to finish ahead of the other, even if they both were projected to be well outside the medals.

Here's one downside: When the next doper wins or finishes in say, the top 10 and it isn't disclosed until months later, what happens then? Clawback and redistribution of money won on betting? A mini Bernie Madoff scandal entirely possible.

There are limits how much someone can bet on the obscure sports and if a bunch of money came in weird the Sports Books can alert the authories.

The first the baa heard about this was when the state gaming commission reached out to speak to them about it - about what 2 weeks before the race? this leads to questions like - what can people bet on? the bets may not be as simple as who wins or in what time. And that’s the issue - what bets will allowed to be taken that won’t impact security or the integrity of the race. I don’t think the baa is against betting. But to spring it on them less than two weeks pre race was absurd.
and the number of ads around here for fan duel DraftKings and mgm are beyond annoying. And now David Ortiz‘s face isn’t just on billboards but he’s also a grand marshall? his wife must really be cleaning him out in the divorce. Anything for a buck.
Gambling ruins the sporting aspect of sports and turns it into an industry that exploits athletes and fans. You don't have to monetize every aspect of sports, it is only the arrogance of people who are trying to manipulate the sport to their own advantage. It is the frat-boy mentality of trying to fleece others and gain advantage because they are able to access some sort of knowledge that others don't have.
I see there are gambling shows on ESPN all the time now, they are going in the wrong direction for sports. It is so bad that they have to include ads reminding people not to gamble their life savings. Don't get sucked into that scummy world.

It is rapacious, it will consume everything that it can reach.

In what way did betting in the us "[find] ways to blow past any regulations"??? As I said above, the govt lets them advertise so extensively bc they are donating to / bribing them. they are abiding by the regulations.
