No one's excited about Mantz because they think he'll be a great 10k runner, his potential clearly lies in the marathon. That being said, he has a ways to go in the marathon before the hype becomes justified. I think he'll improve some in the marathon, maybe get down to 2:06 and have a moment or two of glory, but won't ever consistently be world class.
For perspective, doesn't Webb have a faster 10000 PB?
No. Webb ran 27:34, Mantz has run 27:25 twice.
I don’t think anyone thinks Mantz is going to be the next Galen Rupp. Nobody expects him to set 10,000 ARs or win Olympic medals. But he may take over Rupp’s recent role as the U.S.’s clear #1 marathoner and only consistent 2:06-2:08 guy, and hopefully he’ll beat Rupp’s marathon PR one day.
He got smoked in the 10,000 with Kinkaid and Klecker. He did run a 2:08xx but that was on a super fast course. He has shown no ability to run a super fast time. 27:25 in Super shoes is worth close to a 28:00 in non-super shoes. The guy is the equivalent of Kate Tuhoy as a very good collegiate runnner but nothing on the professional world stage. His PR in marathon just might be 2:08 and 27:25 in 10K.
OP, can you please cite the name of the poster or posters who have disparaged Mantz and declared that Mantz was on testosterone medication while in HS and was coached by a guy who travelled with testosterone in his bag and has been banned from the sport?
I don't think anyone who is sane thinks Connor Mantz is exactly like Galen Rupp. I think most people's comparisons are that Mantz might eclipse Rupp in the marathon soon, if Mantz continues to rise and Rupp declines.
But Mantz and Rupp are very different runners. Rupp's indoor Mile PR is 3:50. I don't see Mantz having that much speed. But I do believe Mantz has an engine that could match Rupp in some areas. Mantz also has some insane strength as shown by his NCAA XC titles. If Mantz were to match Rupp in any event, it would be the marathon.
and 27:25 in the middle of a marathon build is actually very good
Yes and to compare to Galen Rupp- Rupp would likely not have raced a race at all or least that big in his marathon build up.
Like when he ran both track 10k and marathon in 2016, winning the Olympic Trials 10k in his buildup for the marathon. He also ran the 5k at the trials.
And then ran the Olympic 10k 8 days before the marathon.
Or when he finished 6th in 2021 trials again a month and a half before the Olympic thon.
Mantz reminds me of a Derrick, McDougal, Curtis type guy who is a true competitor compared to some other of their contemporary Americans (who have fast PR's, but weren't necessarily consistent competitors in their peak). Like those three, Mantz could pop with a Ward-like surprise result in a big show, but unlike Rupp or Ritz will probably never be truly competitive in an international field.
A fast 2:08 is nice on paper, but as aforementioned: the real elites are sub-2:06 minimum

When you come, come correct.
No not like then. But Rupp doesn't race very often- look at his racing record.

I know you're naive and likely stuck behind a key board in your mom's house but seriously- if you had a list of every race Rupp ran in any given year, he doesn't race often.
And, ironically (and you're probably to young to know this), running fewer races what a hallmark of his former coach (Salazar) when he was running at the top.
He said it in an interview- that he can accomplish more in a workout than in just another sub 100% effort.
ANd he DID give it all in his races- Falmouth and the last rites, in the 83 world cross he was carried from the finish and was puking.

2 things: 1. I will admit he has been hurt and has had surgeries the last 3 years so he hasn't raced as much. 2. You said "Rupp would likely not have raced a race at all or least that big in his marathon build up." I gave 3 examples of where he races on some of the BIGGEST stages (Olympics and Olympic Trials) in the build up to a marathon. Proving you wrong. You responded by insulting me instead of providing any evidence to the contrary instead talking about Salazar.
And of course I am posting not in my mom's basement but at work. Wouldn't waste my free time on this website.

For some reason Letsrun is obsessed with this guy.
Nothing in his results up until now suggests he will be great. Very good but not great.
He is a 26 year old in the super shoes era with 13:11, 27:25, 60:55, and 2:08:16 PRs. Obviously very good but we need to be realistic about his ceiling.
At the same age, Rupp had an Olympic Silver and had run 12:58.
He hasn't been a pro long, but with his pr's at this age, similar to Salazar, Nenow, and the like, he is on a level with our best 1980s distance runners, only he has superspikes on the track that are worth a few seconds and supershoes on the roads that are worth maybe a minute in a half and 2-3 minutes in a marathon.
Rupp, International fields? Come on, now, the Olympics are the Olympics and all, but there are over 100 Kenyans faster than Rupp's marathon PR. The guy doesn't exactly throw his hat into the ring - he ran Prague after the Boston DNF when nobody even realized Prague had a marathon. As far as I know there was no rule keeping him from Dubai, Tokyo, London, or Berlin. He ran the trials Q in a half in Portland.

So if you ignore the highlights of Rupps career, because he has decided to focus on winning medals at international Olympic/WC competitions instead of chasing fast times, his resume isn't as impressive.

We will have to wait and see what he tops out at. He has only run one marathon in not favorable conditions without the pacing he was expecting. Has the debut record for American born marathoners.
