Good info. Thank you.
I swear by split shorts but for marathons I use Decathlon's own brand Kalenji tights with a lot of pockets all around, still feeling snug. Side pockets fitting 2 gels on each side, and large front and back. I've carried 8 gels from start, barely noticing them as they wrap naturally around. And easy to grab even in good pace. Also 2 small zips if you need it.
Incredibly cheap - less than 30 EUR equiv here in Sweden. I've used them as well as the 3/4 and full tight vrethren for years, none of them showing signs of needong retirement.
don't know if you've got Decathlon in the US but buy them whilst racing in Europe :)
I usually run in split shorts (idc about coberage or how I look at all) because one of my half tights that I have make my hip movement feel really contricting (the other one has my old school name on it so i Don't wanna run in it all the time). I also just feel better in that one pair of split shorts of mine. It feels like I'm stronger all of a sudden comøared to my tights if that makes sense, no constricting fabric.
But in all seriousness half tights make so much more sense... Because any pocket in shorts is bound to bounce with gels in it. And that is even worse than any half tights imho.
If there only exist a half tight that is tight around the legs and loose/flexibl around the hips. And I myself usually don't like pockets that much because I don't use them enough.
Maybe a gold option is to just stick the gels to your shorts with velcro or tape or wht they use like cross country skiers often do for long races. Now you can stick unlimited number of gels anywhere!

Kanji’s trail tights are my favorite. I’ve run numerous marathons with them and have not had a problem fitting 10+ gels and my phone in them.
I appreciate the responses, though this thread is 7 months old and I finished my marathon 5 months ago haha
Yeah the spammers find these old threads and bump them with posts that link to whatever stupid thing they’re shilling.
which rights did you end up going with? I have one pair each of the Nike trail, Reggie, and Allston and unsure which I like the best (all have pros and cons).
Tights (not rights)
Well since we’re all here why don’t you give us an update?! What tights did you select and how did they perform?
Men (the biologically born males) be careful when wearing tights or half-tights. I and several male friends of my experienced some significant 'junk pain' not too long after wearing these half-tights. Testicular pain can have causes that aren't due to underlying disease. Examples include trauma, tight pants or underwear, jogging, bicycling.
Testicular torsion occurs when a testicle rotates, twisting the spermatic cord that brings blood to the scrotum. The reduced blood flow causes sudden and often severe pain and swelling.
I'm not saying it will indeed cause any grief - but if you experience some unexplainable grief 'down there', it might just be the culprit.
Alston are more compressive leading to overall a tighter feel. They also have 2 more small gel pockets in the back. I prefer the Reggie for longer distances - the lined Reggie are the most comfortable running bottoms I've tried. You can fit 4 gels in the pocket.
I wish there were more physical Decathlon shops. I really like them. You'd think that they'd be a lot more popular. The quality of the stuff is really good and the prices are very low too.
Alston run longer and smaller than Reggie, but not a full size difference. I ran a marathon in Alston specifically for the side pockets (carried 4 gels) and the most annoying thing about Alstons was the lack of a drawstring. Odd, but after sweating a bunch I would have liked a way to hold the waist in place as they drooped in the back. Might try Bandit or Soar next, but switched to Nike Aeroswift with side pockets & liner for a spring race and it was a better fit than Alston. Reggies, while very comfortable, are too hot for me over 26.2

Haha fair. I wore Tracksmith Allston and they worked great. I carrier 6 gets and they fit well in the 3 pockets and were easy to grab during the race. Very satisfied overall.
One caveat is that I’ve had two different pairs develop a hole in the seam by the crotch. Tracksmith sent me replacements so was all good, but they may not be built to do years’ worth of long runs. That’s actually in line with how Tracksmith markets them (as race day half tights) so I don’t have a problem with it.
Also my junk is very visible in the lighter color pair I have since they are thin material, so unless you’re into that I’d get them in black
