Here comes deno to ruin another good sprinting thread. any minute now he’s going to post a wall of sprint records from the 40’s that have zero context to Norman dropping down. Then he’s going to argue with all of us individually and beg us to register like he’s getting a kickback for it
Wayde Niekerk, the 400m wr holder also has sub-10, sub-20 chops, as of course does Fred Kerley, the reigning world champion in the 100m. So, it is not that uncommon for 400m guys to go down in distance. Michael Johnson ran 43.18/19.32, so he was clearly on the level of a 9.7-9.8 guy in the 100m but did not contest it when he was at that level. That farce of a 150m with Donovan Bailey showed his starting skills needed work.

Incorrect. Ackbar was a 9.9-mid/low guy.
Norman is deceptive. I would have to look closer at his 100m races to comment meaningfully on his prospects, but I hope he emerges competitive with the best—especially, I hope that he and others displace Coleman.

Well just how much can be said unless you add some history about a move like this?
Know all you can.
Quincy Watts was a 100 sprinter starting out he switched to the 400m, James Sanford a 400m cat who went down to the 100, same with Dennis Mitchell.

See ya learned something.
Bolt began his career and early success at 400. he did okay at the 100. [ and later dropped a sub 44(? ) Relay leg just jumping in a 4x4 for fun]
Tyson Gay barely dabbled in the 400 and ran a 44.8.
Remember Xavier Carter winning the 100 and 400 at the ncaa's?
Many think Boling has shown as much promise [in his brief forays] at 400 as he has at 100.
I would say the events are more compatible/ similar than commonly thought
Kerley, Coleman, Bracy, Bromell, and a host of 9.9-10.1 guys who could theoretically pop a good race at any point too. Now throw in Norman and maybe Lyles. What a doozie!
I like the guy and hope we see some exciting races. He's a bit of a nut job and prone to folding mentally. Hopefully the 100 will be to his advantage as there is less thinking involved and less time for that to happen. Of course the pressure before the race can be even higher.
Many, including myself, did not believe Kerley had a hope in hell at the 100M. He proved us wrong. I am more confident of Norman's ability at the 100M than I was of Kerley's. I believe he will be a superior 100M runner to Kerley. Actually better than Lyles will be. Time will tell.
Norman is certainly better than kerley but I don't know about lyles. Noah is known for his bad starts but that can be fixed with practice and muscle. You can't change top end speed much. Just ask coleman
He doesn't care about the glory of breaking the 400 world record, he'd get way more money being the best 100 guy.
Literally nobody who isn't a huge track fan has ever heard of any 400 runners other than Michael Johnson, but the fastest 100 guy is often a pretty well known celeb
