Think he got sick before USAs. Same thing happened when he DNF’d at USA road 5k. Maybe he should just stop starting races when he’s sick and then this thread wouldn’t exist
He seems like a good guy with a kind heart and it’s hard seeing him constantly fail and fail and fail. Everytime it looks like he’s starting to pick up steam he fails again. It’s sad to see such a promising prospect never win. Every time he steps on that line to race I could bet my house he will not win. What could he do different to change this?
He could join a real team. I don't think he is doing the necessary work to reach World Class level, his workouts are just simply not hard enough looking at Strava. Its night and day listening to some of his peers like Grant Fisher talk about how he would get back from BTC workouts and just pass out on the floor he was so exhausted. The Tinman "keep the ball rolling" philosophy is great up to a certain level, but at some point you need to go all in and go for broke.
Jakob doesn’t train so hard that he has to pass out in the floor when gets home. Neither does Kipchoge. Drew already complains about being tired and run down. Training harder isn’t the answer. As another poster alluded to, high volumes of threshold/sub-threshold work > low volumes of CV.
Not sure if he can string together high enough mileage for it. He can run very solid off what he’s been doing. 3:34 outdoors. But today he just went backwards last 200 (I didn’t watch it so I didn’t see his positioning) but Ribich was behind him and put up a fast last 200 to move up.
I was at the meet. From the beginning it looked l like his right knee wasn't coming up all the way. Seems like there's something wrong with his right hip flexor.
Luckily Drew posts all his workouts to strava and I follow them very closely. My conclusion is he is an insane talent. It is amazing how well he runs based on what he does. His training is what you would expect from a 14-14:30 guy.
Go through his strava. It is a bunch of 5:00ish threshold and mile pace 200s. Which are fine to get good, but it just lacks the raw intensity to get great. Look at the most succesful groups in the US right now- BTC and On, they are known for absolutely brutal workouts. This was always my criticism of Tinmans training, at some point you need to do the brutal fast fast work to really make the jump.
The problem is not the trainign thought. Drew can not workout very hard/high mileage (in comparison to his peers) without getting hurt. He has been running 80 mpw the last months and this is the most mileage he has ever run.
I think the answer is to just keep what he is doing but try not to get hurt and miss months at a time. He obviously has insane talent still but regardless of who you are if you miss 2-3 months every year you won't be great.
I (like many others) believe switching groups would be a great move. But if he gets injured immediately there is no point.

Not a Hunter fanboy but it does appear he was sick this week.
He should join a legit team/ get a legit coach. Unfortunately being sponsored by adidas probably makes that hard to happen. Lose lose for both athlete and sponsor.

Most of the On team are on Strava. None of the workouts they do seem that hard given their performances. Nothing that Joe Klecker does indicates a 12:54. Nothing Monson does indicates an AR in the 3k. This fall, they’ve just done fartleks, tempos/threshold and some mile pace 200s + hills. They did like 4 semi-hard workouts before racing indoors.

To piggyback off this, nothing Jakob does is hard given his performances. Both ON and Jakob do more volume than Drew but if you can’t be healthy at 80 MPW then you shouldn’t run 90-120

If they can put together $10M for his contract, they're invested enough to brush aside this TME experiment, and put a real set up around him
I know that $10M amount is bandied about, but was that a max that he could earn if he hit every milestone or incentive?
Drew isn't athletic/graceful enough to reach the next level.
Changing the way one moves is very difficult, as it's not just a matter of working on running form. He needs to change the way he holds himself, the way he stands, walks, etc.
Odds of that happening are close to zero considering how few people are competent in such instruction.
Judging by TME's recent 'day in the life' video where Drew mentions his Mom's always frustrated because the first tab on her laptop is LR, I wonder which of the users she's lurking as...
