It would be helpful for T&F if World Athletics website posted personal bests going back to age 12. Is that a legal issue? Posting personal bests of minors? Psychologists will tell you T&F talent is measured by 200m dash. When we see a fella sprinting the last lap 25.xx seconds if we could review personal bests and see for example Y Nuguse was a sub-25 F.A.T. 200m dash guy at age 16 it would quiet some of the P.E.D. suspicion. If we could see T&F P.B. going back to age 12, even if an athlete makes a big leap, we could see evidence of the talent in other events.
This guy held off a career in track to go to dental school but then flipped to be a pro athlete. Roger Bannister went to I believe Oxford to be a doctor and all. You can't use all the stereotypes on Yared. He was born in America. Medical student. He's super smart. Yeah he's also Black and the best miler in the US and he's got way more talent than Steve Holman. Track is just happens to be a super talent he can pursue. He's not on drugs. Smart medical students generally never do drugs. He's the real deal. He's like if Roger Bannister got a pro contract and left school.
I doubt very much Roger Bannister would have accepted a pro contract and abandoned school. In later life, he regarded his contributions to neurology as being a greater achievement to him than the four minute mile.
Deciding to accept a pro contract and walk away from your medical career might result in a temptation to take drugs to 'make sure it was the right choice'.
Hey the excuse king chimes in to cast aspersions. Imagine that.

How does this make any sense? He already has plans to resume his dental career after the 2028 Olympics, and it's not like his dental career is over; it'll be right there waiting for him when he's done running. As a guy with a foot already out the door, he's just there to compete. I also don't see how that experience of competing wouldn't be "worth it" without global medals. as a guy who soloed 3:34. He could've probably run 3:32-3:33 just by cutting out the burden of splitting his athletic career and his dental career, let alone training with arguably the best middle distance squad on the planet at altitude. The former already positions him as a regular on global championship squads. Your logic makes no sense.

Huhhh??? He has not even started dental school yet. When he is done running, he can start dental school and 4 years later he can begin his dental career.
He had no burden splitting his athletic career and his dental career, he just did what the usual student athlete does. He ran and completed an undergrad degree in 4 years at Notre Dame. He came back for a 5th yr to work on a masters in business (note not dental).
Since he has been with ON, he has been 100% focused on running. No school, no dentistry.
Most likely, after a long successful running career, he will choose to not go to dental school.
Okay, replace "dental" with "academic" in my previous post, then. Even then, the pre-med track is more rigorous than, say, sociology. The point is that training full time yields better results than splitting your life between high-stress academics and athletics, let alone training full time with the best mid-d squad in the world.
"Most likely, after a long successful running career, he will choose to not go to dental school."
What gave you this idea? He's on record saying he wants to go to dental school after he finishes his running career.
I have met Yared a few times, namely after his 3rd place at the 2021 trials and I seriously cannot see the guy doing any drugs. I know everyone says that about runners they like but the dude just has an Uber-innocent personality. I truly believe he is clean and this big step up has been the result of focusing on running full time - getting a premed degree at ND carries a pretty big load of stress that he doesn’t have anymore. Plus pro group + at altitude, it adds up IMO
Shhh. We don't like common sense here. We see an athlete of color with a funny African name and we accuse him of doping and question his citizenship. You must be new here.

It's just silly to be praising him for doing the standard academic program of a good school. Every one of his teammates did the same thing.
Many of the pros too. Joe Klecker was pre dental and plans on dental school after running. His wife Sage was pre-med, applied math, bio-engineering with a 3.9999 gpa and was top scholar athlete in nation. Grant Fisher, electrical engineering at Stanford, Elise Cranny - biology/pre-med also at Stanford.
Every kid on the xc team at 8 ivy's, Stanford, Notre Dame, Cal, Ucla, Northwestern, Rice, Vanderbilt, Duke, etc. "split their life between high stress academics and athletics".
Training with best mid d squad in world? It's all he does, it's his job now. This was never combined with academics, he chose to do this after school was over.
Dental school. Let's say he winds up his running career in 2035. He has $10 million in the bank, a wife and 2 kids. He has a b.s. and MBA from Notre Dame. ON offers him a career in management, or he wants to coach like Ritz. Well maybe he decides to skip dental school.

I don't understand your comment about him being black. That makes you either a pro or con racist.
This post was edited 1 minute after it was posted.
How are you interpreting what I'm saying as praise? That alone shows your bias. I'm pointing out that taking the stress and time investment of pre-med out of the equation should result in better results on the track.
Good for Joe Klecker. He got faster after graduating and running full-time, too. You're just proving my point. Same with Fisher. I really don't know why you're getting so defensive or even what point you're trying to make since the examples you provided help prove my point.
Nuguse is physiologically gifted, just like other Ethiopians: Tefera, Kejelcha, Girma and others.
One problem with Ethiopians is their inconsistency. Hopefuly American environment, his coach and his team can help him with that and he will become a distance running GOAT.
Maybe we are talking past each other. I'm a Nuguse fan, the dmr win, the Olympic qualifier at the acc prelim meet, this recent 3000/mile over 2 weeks. Just wow! and disappointment at Olympics and that 5th yr at n dame dealing with injury. He handles both wins and defeats with poise and grace.
It's just he's not a dentist, he's not a dental student. He's very bright and completed 5 yrs at Notre Dame.
On Athletics Club. There is 1 slot on that team for an American miler. Nuguse has it, he earned it. But there is no suffering there and he has no conflict w/ academics. It's an elite full time job for a top pro runner.

A black 3:47 miler is better than a white 3:47 miler for these people.

Grant Fisher is not physiologically gifted? Were Prefontaine, Rupp, Ritzenhein and Tegenkamp physiologically gifted? Were their German roots responsible for their success?
