Now we know why he hadn't signed a contract extension of any kind (1 year/2 years/4 years) of any kind.
I don't think he's a great coach and don't think he's the guy who can get this young group of players to the next level (ie a deep World Cup run). Who that person is that can do this? I have no idea, but it's not Berhalter. Heck, since 1950, only 1 coach has taken the US to the quarterfinals and that was Bruce Arena back in 2002.
If it's true then he shouldn't be coaching. Doesn't matter that it was 31 years ago or that she forgave him. There are thousands of other good coaches (even better than Berlhalter) that haven't abused women that we can pick.
Why does this have 20 downvotes to only 1 upvote? A woman abuser should not be mentoring young men, this is common sense. It's concerning that letsrun posters so strongly support an abuser.
This is really disappointing. I had a lot of respect for Claudio and have been watching Gio play with excitement over the last couple years. Really hate to see this kind of drama come from a young star and a legendary USMNT player. This is just so petty coming from Claudio and his wife.
The incident is absolutely a non-issue.
I think Berhalter has done a good job, but not a great job. The team has more control and looked far less chaotic than in past years. But, getting beat by defensive lapses, like in Netherlands game, when defense used to be something we could count on is an issue. Of course our attackers still lack the finishing touch to put the ball in the net more often, but that part isn't so much on the head coach.

Because he's not a woman abuser?
Actually, he's probably the best person to be mentoring young men, he transgressed (obviously not in a material way), learned from it, and has evolved for the better. That is somebody that can absolutely mentor young men.
Prior to the WC I had high hopes for Reyna. Now, not so much.
Now, as to his ability to get us to the next level? Doubtful. His decision making in the heat of battle was highly questionable given the unprecedented depth of the US bench.
I was done with GGG after he threw Gio under the bus after the WC. What kind of coach lays bare what should be kept in the locker room. And what player has come out in support of GGG sticking around? Tim Ream? He won't even be around in 2026. By the way, he has no answer when Plan A isn't working.
This is not accurate. You probably did not understand what was in the admission.
Okay I should gave said "half-as*ing it in training".
Better?
No. The sequence is important. Also, the mentality of a soccer player, especially a young and extremely talented one is important. Defenders are more soldier-like. Creative midfielders are a different breed. It is the reason why they can do what they do. If you want them to keep doing that, you don't mess with their emotions. Gregg tried to shake up Gio, which was the right thing to do but he was ill equipped for that type of player. Gio did not respond and, instead, he got depressed. He should have had access to one or several sports psychologists (different approaches) but that was not available. Gio, did not have the capacity to get himself to function. He was not himself. It was an internal block/struggle. He apologized for that. He did not have the maturity to get past it. Still an emotional issue, something you are unlikely to find in defenders and Gregg was a defender.
You cannot turn a Valderama into a Giggs. One does exactly what he was told and he was great at it. The other, was great because no one could guess what he would do.
What Claudio did was beyond bonehead. That should pretty much ensure he is kept out of any inner circles in soccer anywhere on the globe. If Elon invades Mars, Claudio might have chance.
When you are in the public eye, it is understood that you will be looked at under a microscope, but they go too far when they use a proctoscope. Young people do stupid things, you just hope they are a.) not life altering b.) learn from their mistakes. An individual is not the same at 49 as they are at 18. I try not to pay too much attention to what 50 year olds were doing in college. A one-time incident when a person is 18 should not be a disqualifier for a job thirty plus years after the fact.
That being said, Berhalter was wrong to air internal locker room issues regarding Gio Reyna in a public forum. I don't blame him for holding Reyna accountable (I was teammates with a kid whose father was a world class athlete, and the talent never lived up to its potential because he lacked the motivation / discipline), but that is something that needed to remain in house. That is a bigger disqualifier for the position than the domestic issue when he was a teenager, which by all accounts he learned from.

With Claudio and his wife acting/ reacting this way, what does this do for Gio's chances going forward.

You are all demented. USA made a big deal about human rights abuses against women by other countries in the world cup.....at the same time they hired a WIFE BEATER to be their head coach.
It's a privilege to be a head coach of a world cup team. Yes, one dumb move at 18 SHOULD disqualify him. Would you want him to coach your daughter's team? If a guy hits a woman once, there's a 100% chance he'd do it again.

It’s concerning the Reyna’s took 30 years to report this if they genuinely found the incident that egregious…and still continued to be friends and stay very close with him.
