And Crater brings back their 2-6 guys including one of the top sophs in the nation
Great Oak has sent many top-7 varsity teams to Bob Firman. They went there in 2018 when they were really good
They seem to be down now since they got a new coach and lost their 2-4 from last year. And their top returner is in the middle of the pack for varsity now
Yeah Great oak has been pretty solid historically, even dominant, but the point is that none of the rocky guys have experianced heavy competition towards the top of the race. 2019 Firman had Sainsbury in the freshman race which isn't exactly a top notch field, and aside from runninglane (back when the top rocky guys were 15:20's and 30's) they weren't fast enough to experiance "real running" up front. Compare that to Crater and Jesuit who have a long history of attending fairly big meets such as Woodbridge and doing well.
I think that the main difference between Rocky and the Oregon teams is that Crater and Jesuit are "championship teams" who gear for the post season and focus on the big meets, while Rocky seems to be a "we'll run at whatever meet we can find" type of team.
If Rocky Mt gets into NXN it would be their first time and Crater's first time at NXN. Cool to see more Northwest programs attempting to get to the national meet. It looks like a few more schools are building for the next few years as well. Crater will be the heavy favorites next fall for the NW with a handful of other programs in the mix for a bid to nationals.
It will definitely be pretty interesting to see how the top schools this year reload. Crater is going to be gunning for top 1 next year for sure. Jesuit seems to reload pretty well, although they lose 3 guys who could be banging around in the front of the race. Rocky is reloading quite well, with Heemeyer and Lucas looking extremely dangerous for next year, all they need is a few guys to drop a little time and they could be just as good as this year. And then of course Coeur d'Alene Idaho is looking extremely good for next year as well, with only losing 1 of their scoring 5.
The success of Jesuit OR next year depends on the health of Schumacher, and Bromert switching fully to XC / track would be a nice add to the team. But if he really wants to focus on soccer, the can let him. He is on the varsity soccer team.
They bring back 4 guys (1 jr, 2 fr, 1 so). Also another junior who spent lots of time in their top 7.
That’s a lot talent back but they lose their 1-2-3 which will be hard to make up for.
Crater has a shot of winning NXN next year but as of now, they look to be only 5-deep so they might need a 6th and 7th to step up in case someone has a bad day
CDA actually isn’t graduating anyone at all
Their girls team isn’t either
My bad, I thought that Jacob King was a senior.
A couple of more darkhorses next year will be-
Kamiakin WA (made NXN in 2017-2019). Very young team this year. Seem to do well at the end of the season. But they haven’t kept up as of late. But they are lead by 2 sophomores. One of them has a last name Teeples
Seattle Prep WA. Returns 1-4 from state but will need a 5th.
Issaquah WA. Returns 5 of their top 7. 4 nonseniors went under 16:45 at state. Will need a 5th though
Boise Senior ID. Returns 4 of their top 5. But will need to find a fifth
Idaho Falls ID. Returns 4 of their top 7 + Luke Athay who has been out this season from an injury.
Bozeman MT. Reloaded nicely. Won NXN in 2016. Returns 5 varsity guys
Eastlake WA. In the middle of the season they looked to be in contention to make NXN. But they faded. Returns 5 of their top 7.
This didn’t age well….
Guess the committee doesn’t like to select teams that added a transfer to the scoring 5
There's no way that has anything to do with the selection process. At least they are ranked 11th on Dyestat heading into NXN weekend, with losses to only Crater and Jesuit....
So at NXR, Rocky Mountain finished 28 points behind the second best team in the country.
Instead of them, they selected teams that ended up getting 16th and 17th at nxn
One spot away from making NXN twice in a row

A little late here for this scintillating analysis, Jeffe.
2023 was faster and deeper this year, and last year’s #5 was the reason that Rocky wasn’t really that close to Jesuit or Crater.
2022: 15:27 avg thru 2, 15:33 thru 3, 15:42 thru 4.
2023: 15:16 thru 2, 15:33 thru 3, 15:42 thru 4.
Nearly identical, but Cody Lucas melted down in 2022 and really was a 16:00 or faster guy on the Firman course, and Keith U didn’t have the best day either. 2022 Rocky was far better than 2023 and comparing times like Jeffe did above is lazy analysis.
I just walked through their campus the other day and didnt see the Rocky Mountains anywhere. Very dissapointing. Also, 4 mile route with a max elevation gain of 9ft. Might be something to look into if they want to move up the ladder. Those times are ok but nothing ro get too excited about on a national level if they are run on flat as pancake courses. Especially for a school that size.
Why is there a school called “Rocky Mountain” in IDAHO?
Rocky Mountains is in COLORADO
Rockies is are everywhere. Duh.
