Cycling is different, minute for minute running is more effort. That's why cyclists tend to put in 2-3x the hours as runners. The big benefit for cycling for "conditioning" people is lower risk for injuries (minus getting hit by a car) and keeping your HR in the fat burn zone. So much easier to stay lean as a cyclist than a runner.
If you are a healthy runner and care about your times, then don't cycle much if at all. Runners who get into triathlon will experience a significant decline in their running ability. They will blow away the triathletes without a running background, but will lose running performance from when specialized.
