Maybe we could see Shetty make the same progression that Leo made?
So, the projected number 2 for next year, who is a junior, was 20 seconds slower than Leo Young as a freshman and 35 seconds slower than McDonnell was as a junior. He beat the rest of the returners (sans Doshi) by 20 seconds. Yikes. The cliff came up quickly. Going to be a rough 2023 for the NP fans. Making it to the state meet next year will be a huge win.

I agree. The girls team will be a whole lot better next year. They already did well at Clovis this year after graduating much of their team and are nationally ranked. They only graduate Hawkins after this season.

Yes, this was a disaster weekend
Guevara finally not being #7, but only #10 (no improvement since last year)

Better? They are losing their number one. Unless they replace her with someone equivalent, they are just losing their top runner and adding mediocrity.
Last year’s top freshman who ran a 16:27 pr last year / 4:39 in track ran a 17:08 here and is not the top sophomore now. The top soph doesn’t even do track and can’t beat the top 3 freshmen

well guess what. They graduated last year’s #1 who was even better and made the top 7 for Alabama. And also graduated 2 more scorers. and last year’s sixth didn’t do track or run much since XC and might not make their top 7 let alone top 5 this year. With her healthy they will be deep next year. Seems like this year’s varsity/top JV is mostly filled with juniors. Gonna be interesting how things work out for this team in 2 years. That new freshman is definitely helping the team though

They lost last year’s scorers and replaced them with not as good and their team is worse. Next year they lose another top scorer and will replace her with a not as good runner. They will be very deep with mediocre runners and will be worse than this year. NXN days are in the rear view mirror.

Yeah on the boys side np won’t be relevant next year. As I mentioned, Ventura, Trabuco hills and San Clemente will be really good.
Also, add Dana hills and Cathedral to the list. Both are young , and Dana hills used to make it every year and made it and finished high the last time NXN took place (after losing 4 seniors! So they are a well-coached and reload!) . Mira Costa will be another team to watch. Clovis will have a strong 1-3 but will need a 4/5
Buchanan seems to be getting better on the boys side
Maybe Doshi can qualify to NXN as an individual next year
Oh my. If this guy kept working he so would have gotten the seventh spot if Hector wasn’t there. Gotta feel for him for sure. Shetty had nothing on him in 2019.
There is just nothing worse than seeing the worst things happen to the best people.
I found this thread. Now another question came to mind. For how many schools would NP’s 7th man would NOT make top 7? Southlake Carroll’s definitely one. Jesuit LA is another with everyone on varsity healthy. CBA has that 1-7 depth. I think Carmel’s 5-7 gap might be closing.

How many teams in the country have a number 1 runner that could make it into Newbury Parks top 5?I am actually looking for real answers to this question, not goofy(and salty) stuff like “a lot” or “more t...
So, Schohn beat Shetty. Dickran’s time was not far off but he was a different race. Dickran should be in mix fighting for a spot with those 2, not surprising since he had the fastest 1600 time of an 8th grader that ended up at NP. I think he ran a 4:41 as an 8th grader.
I also wonder if Adrian Cantu is going to np. He ran a 4:39 as a 7th grader
Who cares about next year? Their top six looked very solid, especially with Sahlman running right with the Youngs this time and Seymour only 4 seconds back. Under 25 second top five spread. That will be much greater when the top guys are going all out at nationals but it won't matter.
Varsity Three Mile Run:
1. Leo Young 14:50.87 2. Lex Young 14:51.08 3. Aaron Sahlman 14:51.08 4. Brayden Seymour 14:55.66 SB 5. Dev Doshi 15:15.59 6. Aaron Cantu 15:20.60
This isn’t even to talk about next year. It’s that when you see how close their 7-8-9 are, you can now tell how badly those guys want to make the top 7 to get the national recognition, especially when you see how much lower the XC class rank on the team was last year for Schohn and Shetty, and given the fact that it’s rare for a freshman to be in the top 7 on a team like this.
Because the juniors know that they won’t be getting any national recognition next year (since the team will not be as good when the seniors leave), they will want to get that seventh spot badly if they know that they are capable of doing so.
But some of those who barely don’t make the top 7 will likely be running varsity for track since there are different kinds of distances. Like Blunt, Hughes-Hindham and Adam Olson (who didn’t even do XC), Porter and a few others did last year.
