Have a cover charge. The heck with 'em if they can't take a joke.
Years ago this guy at the gym had a going away party and a few of us show up. He runs out of everything less than half way through the party. If that's not bad enough, he explains that he looked it up on the web how much to get based on the number of people expected. How lame is that?!
Bye-bye!
He was a doctor, and loaded, fwiw, and apparently, in his case that's not worth much.
I didn't do a housewarming party.....we gave our friends and new neighbors a big party that we paid for at the new house. We called it a spring celebration and that was it. We got a couple of gifts from people who made it our housewarming party in their own minds. It was awesome. Housewarming parties do seem too much like begging to me. I've just always been proud that way. I'd go to someone else's housewarming like it was a normal thing though....just respecting different points of view on the matter.
“Men like to watch, Women like to watch themselves being watched” - I don’t know who said it but I heard it on a clip from the Red Scare podcast so it has to be true

that chick youve been staring at from across the bar.
women don't appreciate being stared at
A man with no experience speaks. My comment was meant for Jamin, anyway. Referring to Jamin's penchant for staring at women at bars, then starting LRC threads about staring at women while sitting at a bar.

Defensive is your middle name on any and every thread you start or comment on. Grow up dude and go find yourself. Sitting in an apartment in Canada ain't gonna cut the mustard.

I can kind of agree with you but we did not send out housewarming invitations or mention a housewarming party at all. The person I remember giving us a gift saw that it was not a housewarming party, (yes it was having that effect), and pulled me off to the side and discretely offered the gift, so as not to risk embarrassing other partygoers. There were about 150 people. We brought in live music and set up all kinds of activities for all ages. It was one of the best parties I ever hosted. I would recommend going that route make it about the people as much as possible. Gratitude for them sharing your life and move.
