"Targeting homes in the 1.2 million range in areas with nice school districts..." does not equal "Can't buy a home"
My wife and I bought a house last year for $150,000 (on an income of $60,000, and a down-payment gift of $20,000 from my in-laws), in a fine neighborhood in a mid-sized town. 3 hour train ride from NYC, if that matters. The housing market is nuts and we probably could have bought a bigger house if people weren't bidding up like crazy, but we managed.
I realize that even our situation is privileged to get that sort of a gift for a down payment... but your tunnel vision of reality is only based in the dozen or so markets in the country.
