You can't even go off 5k because cross courses can vary so much, a 17:50 could really be more like 17:20 shape or 16:50 shape depending on how tough the course is
Go compete and then when track rolls up that's a better benchmark
Just to let y'all know Imma prove you all wrong, Imma post every time I pb, never doubt anyone
It's not that we are doubting you kid, it's that you have not run long enough to prove you are even capable of touching 13:30 let alone break 17. You didn't give any sort of training detail on what your weekly training is. I can tell you for sure, dropping times gets exponentially harder when you approach 16, to 15, to 14min for 5k...They are a completely different ballpark, and you may say, wow only a minute, but yeah...it is that much of a difference. Not even 100 college runners have run 13:30 this season, who have running backgrounds...Not a single HS runner has run 13:30 this season. Hard work alone doesn't and won't get you 13:30....That's a fact.
yeah, I get that, It's near impossible but I know I can do it! My 17:50 5km felt easy, my lungs felt fine, arms weren't heavy, I'm certain I'll be low 15's by next summer
I look forward to hearing from you in a year. I think 15:00 alone would be an amazing feat to achieve. You'd definitely get some people and colleges looking your way. First break 17 :)

Imma break 17 very soon easy, Istg Imma be a menace >:)
You do. Most really good HS runners(Fischer, Webb, Ritzenhein, Hunter ) didn’t start out as runners. They did , however , come from endurance sports. So don’t make your goal high school stardom. Think college and beyond. Good luck.
Thanks man, I've been minimally training for the 4 months, but I swear, Ik I have the ability, I've been dropping my pb by 20 seconds ever run, Ik Imma be elite, thanks for the encouragement, I was losing hope tbh but imma start working hard!
Your potential will not be determined by posters on Letsrun. It'll be determine when you staring training seriously and consistently year round, joint cross country, track and see where your performances go. Get off LetsRun, get outside and run.
Well, I don't mean you have to show sprint ability like a coming top sprinter, but it's much easier to make a sub 13:30 5 k runner out from a runner with 24- 25 sec top speed at 200m compared to a runner with 27- 28 sec 200m top speed. But of course there are examples of 13:30 5 k runners who have to dig deep to run a sub 60 sec 400m. And when age 16 you will still improve your sprint speed just by growing next coming years.

It takes close 4:00 speed to run 13:30 so it’s going to take 54 second, or faster, 400 speed to hit that time.
Don't listen to the people who tell you that you have no shot at 13:30. Yes, it is achieved by very VERY few people, but don't let that stop you. 2 min improvement in 4 months is huge. Just train consistently and intelligently, and you will improve. Definitely listen to cramister, climb up one rung at a time.
I'm 16 and have been running properly for about 4 months, I took my 5km from 19:45 to 17:50 in that time span. Is it too late for someone of my age to become an elite runner providing I have the ability?
No; there are many examples of people who started training (or training seriously) at older ages--Peter Snell, Bill Rodgers, etc.
I think when your body is developing it's key to push it quite hard so the organs, tissue etc that are key to running develop properly and to their maximum potential. For example lungs, vo2 max etc probably depends to a degree upon what you did as a kid. If you were sedentary they wont be as big or efficient and no amount of exercise later in life will make up for that.
The best advice i’ve seen in a long time. Probably not exactly for the reasons you mentioned, but still a very good advice.
If you’re really gifted in pure speed, you probably won’t need that advice.
But if you’re slow twitch, I don’t think you can become world class without having done a lot of volume during your early years, whether that’s football(soccer), running to and from school, or just running a lot of miles on purpose.
