What Coach Brosnan did a Newbury Park is more than just coaching. He established a successful PROGRAM and ATMOSPHERE within the confines of a California public school. Yes, he had help from assistant coaches to parents that reinforced the goals he set for the boys and girls in the program. Yes, the program was attractive to runners and their families that lived outside the attendance area of the school. Seems like just what UCLA needs, someone who can establish a program and atmosphere that is attractive to runners and their families. GREAT HIRE UCLA!
Nah...he did not establish a successful program. You are selling him short. This program was HISTORICALLY SUCCESSFUL. There was nothing screaming that any of these athletes with their middle school talent could run sub 4 or 4:01 mile or a 13:43 5000m or multiple 7:57 3000m guys or a 4:38 girl's mile. There has been WAY better/faster middle school athletes in CA that have not run nearly as fast in high school. Brosnan has taken talented kids and took them to historical levels both individually and as a squad. He has also taken average kids and made them better. NO HIGH SCHOOL COACH IN CA OR ANY STATE HAS DONE WHAT HE HAS and especially in such a short amount of time. It's not uncommon parents or district admin to screw up a program. Congrats to them for staying out of his way and letting him do his thing and it's been fun to watch! Good luck at UCLA Coach Brosnan.
