New power move. This will keep the water stations relevant for a few more years.
After the race, Jakob said he was feeling a bit dry, and was hoping to get some water in if the pace wasn't insane and if he could get them before 2000m.
Once it got slow, whoever wasn't taking water was a fool. Entire reason it went from 63's to snail slow was everyone was overheating. Water is critical from that point on.
Much better to dump on your head than drink it though.

In a way I agree with you, but I think you misunderstand the statement being made by Jakob.
You wouldn’t take water in a competitive 800, nor 1500, nor 3k, or 5k. At that level the intensity is too high to be taking water while maintaining pace. I know I wouldn’t be having a fun time trying to drink water while moving at 63-65 per lap pace. Heck, it’s a difficult time drinking water going 5:20-5:30 pace during a tempo run. Jakob was subtly saying “this pace isn’t intense for me”. That’s the flex.
There is absolutely NO REASON for a well-hydrated, ice vest-cooled world class 5ker to take water during a 90F race. Jakob did it not once but TWICE, while asking the crowd for more noise the first time!
An absolute mockery of the competition. What a freaking LEGEND.
Classic Lets Run. Posters here love to talk tough and claim that "real runners" wouldn't need to do this or do that. No professional exerting himself in 90 degree heat would need to drink water! A real runner wouldn't! So you interpret him drinking to mean that he was toying with the field. Was the exciting race not enough on its own? Instead of appreciating it, you push it into a fantasy world that implies that people who need water are weak.
I guess I shouldn't be too critical. I remember when I was in high school, too.

Cheptegei fallowed him out there when they came back from commercial and missed a cup but I guess he ran most of the race in lane three anyways so he was most of the way there.
You Americans realize they didn't go to commercial in real life, right? The race kept going on at Hayward Field, despite the messages from your corporate oligarchs. Oh that's right, they don't even allow you to see the whole race. So much for your "freedom."
