If the training is different how was El G able to win both distances in the Olympics and Moorcroft to run 3:49 and 13:00 PRs 10 days apart. 13:00 is 4:11 mile pace and that requires serious speed work.
1500 only training is different from 1500/5k training which is different from 5k only training. My point is that Drew cannot seem to handle 1500/5k training or 5k only training, as his recent 5k results have shown
His last 5000m was on May 6th which was well before his significant break though in the 1500/mile. I wouldn’t be surprised if he could now run 13:10.

I agree it would be interesting to see what he could do for the 5k now.
I’m sure Drew can improve his 5000, but to what end? The 5 globally/domestically is stacked. Abdi Nur, Nico are on the come-up. Fisher, Kincaid, McGorty, Teare are going to be around. To make the final at worlds 12:59 shape is the floor. Better to explore the 1500 for now, unless he’s able to really build a monster base without injury this winter.
Exactly. The 5k is too stacked, he seems to be inconsistent at it, and the 1500 is wide open in comparison. Seems like a no brainer to me.
Versus facing Hocker, teare, nuguse, Kessler and the rest? Seems like a toss up. He needs to make a big break through in each event to be a contender. It isn't remotely clear which will be easier.
How do you reasonably expect Hunter to go both from 3:34 to 3:32 (a big jump, but possible if he has a good day) as well as from 13:17 to 12:58 (not even in the same area code)???
He's in a good spot to pop 13:05-13:10 in a hot race. He should head over to Europe and look for a 13:00 min paced 5000m or at least a 7:35ish 3000m. This will set him up nicely for the summer. As I said in a previous post, he needs to race and stay healthy. If he can put down a sub 13:10 5000m, mid 7:30's 3000m, and couple 3:34's or so his summer will be a success and give him confidence going into next season.
The 5K and 800 seem to punish you if you don’t specifically train for those distances. I doubt he will ever be a hybrid of 1500/5000. A 3:34 though that’s pretty good no one can take that away from him and suddenly I’m reinvested in his development which means more money

If you’re on the outside looking in, the 1500 is less chalk and upsets are more possible. He should only do the 5,000 if he gets to sub-13:05 shape.
I was quick to post how DONE drew was at the beginning of this year. Happy for him that he’s doing well, hopefully this will be the confidence boost he needs
He’s had chances to make teams, and doesn’t. A mediocre summer league of racing for a few hundred dollars of prize money keeps some athletes motivated. Again, if you can’t put a great race together at USA champs to make team USA, then keep participating in mediocre races
Happy for Drew, but why is Under Armour hosting a track meet on the same night as the beginning of the World Championships?? That’s messed up. All the attention for the next week should be on the athletes competing in Eugene.
In America we use athletes, we do not develop them.
Drew Hunter ran a 1:48 800 in high school without focusing on that event.
Call me crazy, but he's still one of the most talented runners we have, right up there with Hocker and Fisher.
The 5,000 meters was not his event. But now he has built a massive aerobic base from all that over distance training.
As he continues to get his speed dialed in, I am genuinely expecting him to hit 3:32 - 3:33 by the end of this season, and 3:30 or so by next season, provided that he stays healthy.

Not many 25 year olds drop 4s off their 1500m time... Pretty much no Americans run 3:30.... Hey maybe he is healthy for the first time in years and is going to have a big breakthrough. It doesn't seem likely...

Maybe his mom is his best coach after all.
Still, even with the 1:48 in HS, I don’t see him making 1500 teams but I can see him becoming a sub 13 dude.

I absolutely believe that Drew can one day run sub 13
