1) the season before Larry brown won that title, UNC hired Roy Williams who was their longtime golden boy (and ironically replaced Larry brown at KU)
2) Brown had coached for 2 colleges to that point (UCLA and KU) and while he took both to the final 4 he also left both programs with sanctions after his departure.
UNC probably wanted someone who was less likely to bring NCAA attention. Of course Roy presided over the massive academic fraud scandal so that didn't really work out for them.
It seems like the whole american T&F cares more about NCAA than pro T&F.
There’s the institutional tradition of the college system. Many here went to these schools and have vested interest in them (pride). There’s also the structure of the collegiate seasons (xc, indoor, outdoor) where you know when and where you’ll see collegiate stars compete. The team aspect is more pronounced and you have more opportunities to watch them race as a result.
Pros runners are predominately on their own and many of these big name training groups are at risk of being disbanded every olympic cycle or sooner when sponsorship is pulled. It’s hard to build a steady following and build a group brand.
but Reebok group a colossal failure. Some athletes on real contracts never heard from again. Knight only bright spot and injured for Worlds (again).
I'm not sure how fair "colossal failure" is. I wouldn't call it a major success by any stretch but Colin Bennie, Martin Hehir, and Josette Norris have all had strong pro careers thus far as well

Norris had one good season and bombed all the critical meets. She’s going nowhere fast
Absolutely. No one else on that team is worth saving
Well theres one female there that is a one season out of nowhere "one hit wonder". The posts about her keep getting deleted by rojo. Which makes her even more sus
Interesting that subtle comments get deleted while the blatant constant drug accusations of the BTC women are still up on the threads. Rojo must be getting paid off to delete a real “sus post

Can you tell me what athletes besides Knight were on a "real contract?"
Knight was the only big star they had and thus the only big pro. The group WAS FAR FROM A colossal failure.
It seemed to me that the athletes did perfectly well for their talent level.
Colin Bennie. - 2:09 marthon, top 10 in Boston is pretty good for a guy who never scored at NCAAs on the track and was 56th in xc as a senior. Paige Stoner - 32:08 in college. Now 31:22. Martin Hehir - 13:35/28:27 in college. PBs are now 13:29/27:57/2:08:59. Josette Norris - 4:13 in college. 3:59 now.
Seems like good coaching to me.
Fox did a good job of developing what he had to work with.
Those guys and gals weren't winning stuff in college or even finishing top 3 on the track so why would we expect them to be making Olympic teams as pros? The pro ranks are even harder and they did just fine.

Now, the group never made any sense. Let's have a Boston track group and put it in Virginia and then let's don't sign any people of top prop potential but get upset when they aren't the top group in the US.

Nothing ever really happened to UNC because of that scandal, did it? I think hiring Williams probably did work out.
