Puma is aggressively courting athletes and attempting to grow their profile in the U.S. market. Yes, Nike could easily outbid them but their treatment of Allyson Felix a few years back still resonates with a lot of elite women. My observation is that younger women are seeking contracts with guaranteed money, no reduction clauses for injuries and pregnancies, and the freedom to seek additional revenue streams. Nike still tends to favor brand exclusive deals plus the "carrot-and-stick" system of reductions/bonuses. You can potentially make more money with The Swoosh but, it is more of a gamble long-term as injuries and life events inevitably happen.
I seriously doubt Puma is throwing $2 million at Steiner without any conditions/performance clauses.
