Per the article I posted, the author confirmed the death with Devon's mom on Saturday via a social media DM, It seems hard to believe Devon wouldn't know if the word was already out.
RELEASE PUBLICLY...so that not every question he got all throughout the championships was about his dad. It's not that difficult a concept to understand.
I can't imagine racing while just finding out this news. My mind would be anywhere but the race and my legs would be jelly. Condolences to Devon and his family, and while sport in the grand scheme of things doesn't matter, what an exceptional performance from Devon given the tragic circumstances. Even among elite athletes, that is rare.

I don't think he knew. Parents will do anything to help their kids and I bet his mom didn't tell him until afterwards.
We interviewed him after the race. He said he was going to take a few days off and go visit his family in Arizona. If he knew his dad had died, I"m pretty sure he would have mentioned it then or at least cracked up.

With all due respect, why are you sure he "would have mentioned it?" Why do you think he would have done so here and how would he have talked about it? Personally, I think back to how I was feeling when my dad died and if I were him, considering it being so soon at the point, I doubt I would mentioned it and would have waited until later.

That's a good point. If he knew and was still able to perform well enough to make the team, he probably had his emotions pretty bottled up. And he might not have wanted a post-race interview to be the time he let them out.
Either situation seems plausible based on what we know. Regardless, really sad and I wish him the best in the grieving process.
Louis Allen Jr., the father of former Phoenix Brophy Prep and Olympian Devon Allen, died during the weekend, before his son qualified for the world championships in the 110-meter hurdles. He was 63. Bernadette Allen, Louis' wife, confirmed her husband's death in a direct message on social media on Saturday night but asked to wait until after the weekend to release the news.
Absolutely insane. Saw him Saturday afternoon near Hayward across from the ice cream shop, on the way to find dinner. Had to be before he got the news. Life changes in an instant. My deepest condolences go out to him and his loved ones.
