Where I’m from the clocks in the bars are set 15-20 minutes ahead. And don’t go into a restaurant just before closing and except to be served, that’s unfair to the workers in the kitchen who have to clean 🧼
They used to do last orders and ring a bell and warn everyone - do they not do that any more?
This guy came in after the bell was rung.
Bars that close at 2:00 am normally have last call at 1:15 and ring that bell. Then they take those last call orders for another 15 minutes and cut it off. They want everyone out the door by 2:00, so they can clean up and go home.
Apply that same logic to a bar closing at 10:00 and this guy isn’t getting served walking in the door at 9:40. They’ve already started the closing process of putting stuff away and closing out the registers. Once everyone is gone they need to put up the chairs, sweep, wipe things down, etc.
They want to go home. You don’t know when they started their shift. And everyone is still on the clock. Selling one extra beer doesn’t cover the cost of their workers staying an extra half hour.
I got a place in town (very small town) that shuts down at 1am. They kick the non-locals out, pull the shades, and shout “cash only from this point fellas!”.
I only stay out that late twice a year or so but boy does it make you feel like a superstar. They clean and stuff while you’re drinking and having a good time, but that’s no bother.
I went to a brewery that closes at 10pm, but arrived at 9:40pm to grab a drink and they said they already did last call. Is this common for them to already be cleaning up and not serving anything even if they advertise they’re open until 10pm? I don’t have a good enough social sense to know
Reminds me of my days in the pizza business, for some reason the teenagers running the show thought they got to decide when the place closed and it was always funny seeing them trying to justify packing it up at 7:30 when closing time was 8.
if you order at 9:59 you are not likely going to slam that beer and leave at 10.
Don’t make assumptions, you don’t know me.
I actually believe, as someone who works in restaurant management, that they should have served you at 9:40 or 9:59. The staff would think you’re an a-hole, but as a business principle they should have served you.
I don't understand the idea that they should serve at 9:59 "as a business principle." The brewery makes maybe $3 in profit on the one beer they sell the guy. If cleanup takes even a couple extra minutes because they had a customer at the bar until 10:15 instead of having an empty restaurant at 10, that entire profit gets eaten up by the payroll cost. So "as someone who works in restaurant management," you just took a hit on employee goodwill for no gain. And you're probably one of these managers who wonders why no one wants to work for you anymore...
This is definitely the norm now for all businesses it seems like. Everyone is closing up and is closed up practically 15 minutes before the listed closing time. Employees are finally standing up for themselves which is an inconvenience to the customers, but hey I get it. I went to get an oil change at my favorite place before the long weekend and I rushed out of work, skipped my run to get over there, arrived at 6:40, the place closes at 7. There was two cars in front of me, one already in the bay and the guy turned me around. The business has 5 minute oil change advertised in the logo pretty much and I know it wouldn't be an impossible feat to do 3 cars in under 20 mins. But again hey maybe bud has his beers to get to.

It is impossible. There’s no such thing a a 5 minute oil change . Hot metal expands and warps. They’re not jacking your car up after you just raced over there.
Depends on the place, but most bars do last call 10-20 minutes before closing. If you are a regular, sometimes they make a quiet exception. Also, if you hint at a big tip, they might break the rule.
Did you go in there all liquored up and jonesing for one more? Bartenders can spot that, and they don't want to be the one who serves some drunken fool the drink that really lit him up to where he's careening around, yelling and puking like some douche.
I figured someone would chime in after I posted should have specified they had multiple technicians in there and each bay can accommodate two cars and they don't need to jack your car up you just drive over the pit. And the place does insinuate in its advertising that you're in and out in 5 minutes. I know it takes longer. My little brother works at a quick lube shop and is always getting off later because of cars coming in right before closing so obviously their business is different and will honor the closing time... But like I said, I get it. If they're not paying you after 7, why should you stay.. You don't have to.

This probably didn't happen or you were rude or drunk. If you went to a "brewery" and they didn't want to serve you why not just buy a 6 pack (or more likely individual cans? Problem solved. Anyone can sell a beer and have you out of there in under a minute.
Since your story involves no logic there must be more to the story.
Bad form going in that close to closing time. I’d think a brewery would sell you a growler to go pretty much right up until the end of their posted hours of business though.

What was your expectation if they served you at 9:42pm? Would you slam the drink and be out of there in 10 minutes? Or would you obliviously sit around until 10:05 or later and make the staff effectively kick you out?
It's not a convenience store where most people spend less than 5 minutes inside, the vast majority of people aren't interested in being in a bar for under 20 minutes, so if you show up this close to closing they'd rather just not serve you. They close at 10, staff wants to be out the door a couple minutes after that and not still herding people out of the place.
not disagreeing- I told the business no problem thanks and it’s all good. I’m just wondering if this type of thing (closing early and/or early last calls) is the norm at breweries and/or the norm nowadays with businesses maybe getting slower and not doing as well
You're a freaking dip.
I.don't even go to bars and i know that last call is 15-20 minutes before actually closing.
Having worked at 7-eleven and Circle K in the past ...this was our policy.
So by 1:40 am, it was up to me...and believe me, i judged you.
if you had manners and didn't look or act Neanderthal...I'd unlock the coolers for you if you showed up before 2am.
but if you looked entitled or like a stoner or party kid, it was a hard no.
you sound entitled...I'd have said no too.
Kid.
You sound like the douche. You decided whether or not to sell to someone based on what they look like or how they treat you? What are you, the alcohol gatekeeper?
I guarantee you your boss would be pissed if he knew you did that. Business shouldn’t be based on how you feel about someone, it’s simply a transfer of goods for money. You sound entitled.
Only complete assholes walk into a bar 20 minutes before closing expecting open ended service. Most bars where I live do last call 20 or 30 minutes before closing. Especially during COVID, you bet closing times are malleable. But hey if it's slow we might close an hour early and if it's busy we might be open 2 hours past closing. A private establishment with good product can do what they want. I will say this as bartender: if you serve one person 10 or 25 before closing or after last call, the whole bar will want special treatment. That means serving everyone who wants "just one more" and you end up staying 2 or 3 hours later because it takes forever to close everyone out. Try walking in, dropping a 20 and say: Here you can keep this. Is it possible to have one quick round if I do it fast and not hang around forever? You probably will get better results but don't be an entitled ass if you still get a hard NO.
