Just because she's about as fast as Mu at 400 doesn't mean a thing at twice the distance. She doesn't have the ability to be world medal contender at the 800.
During the indoor track season, I noticed a lot of 400HH would move up to the 800m or 1,000m for endurance. I would move down for foot speed and would meet them in the middle. Years ago, I raced Fred sharp at the US Indoor Championships and wound up beating him in the 800m. Fred was a solid 400HH 48.86. He also ran 1:47.53 for the 800m and 2:23.64 for the 1,000m. With the 400HH is very similar to the 800m outdoor and the 1,000m indoor.
I'm more interested in seeing her give the open 400m an honest go with some event specific training. I think she is capable of 50.9 in the hurdles this year! So what would we guess in the 400m. I think she'd might be able to do 47 high and probably just miss the dirty world record.
Well put. By all indications, she's a sprinter with zero appetite for distance running. If she's ever able to drop a 2 flat 800 in training, maybe she'll enter a low key meet to enhance the brand--post-LA, when yet another McLaughlin 400H WR elicits more yawns than wows.

Actually, when she was at Kentucky, she considered doing an 800m, but Floreal shut that down.
Rightly so, it seems. Maybe she'll speak about that discussion with Floreal on a podcast someday. I'd love to see SM crush an 800, but does anyone want to witness another Mu/1500 debacle?
She's on top of the world in the 400H and 4x400 relay. Zero reason to seriously try the 800. But for the fun of speculation (same true for Karsten Warholm), she could probably hang on for a 600 WR. But beyond that, she'd need a totally different training regime that would weaken her at 400H.
She has the same odd of breaking female 600m world best as K. Warholm has of breaking 600m world best. Somewhere between zero and 1%, closer to zero.

They would both be more competitive on the world stage at the 200m than the 800m - not saying they’d be in the WC finals at 200, but that’s more their event than the 800 which is a completely different animal. Good for Dobek on figuring out where his true talent lies, but Warholm is running 20.5 before he’s running 1:46.

If she made a serious effort to get that mark (she won’t, nobody does) the likelihood would be way higher than 1%. I do tend to doubt Semenya’s 1:21.77 would be attainable, but I fully believe she could run 1:22.x if she wanted to.

She did discuss it. She said she thought she could have run 2:05.
She also said she wanted to try the long jump her freshman year and Floreal shut that down too.
She had told Floreal several months before the end of her freshman year that she was going to go pro, so Floreal wanted her to focus on getting the college 400H record before she left school. That's why he wouldn't let her try the other events.
If she had stayed in school for her sophomore year, then that would have been a different story and she might have done other events.
2.) What does she run with a regular training block of moderate mileage middistance training?

A female 400 hurdler with very good technique can run a flat 400 about 2 seconds faster than her 400h time.
So if Sydney can run 50.9 in the 400h at some point this year, that would put her at 48.9 in the flat 400, which would make her the 2nd best in the world behind Miller-Uibo.
Sydney would have to improve A LOT in order to break 48.
2.) What does she run with a regular training block of moderate mileage middistance training?
1. Right now she could probably run 2:04.
2. If she trained exclusively for the 800 for a year, around 1:58 or 1:59.
Her problem is that she is too fast at 200. Everyone has a range they are great at and Sydney is great at 200 to 400. She is only very good at 100 and 800.
She probably could be top 10 in the US in the 800, but probably never top 3. And why would she do the 800 anyway? She knows that by focusing on the 400 she can win Olympic medals in the 400h, flat 400, and the 4x400.
Good Post!
Her 100/200 times indicate she is a sprinter, after racing about 600m her legs would become extremely lactic and her weak cardio system would be over taxed. Perhaps she will run a sprint race this year; people will be surprised to know she is most likely a world class 100/200 sprinter. With all of that said, with training she could become good at the 800 to an extent, but never to the level she is at in sprints. Btw, she ran XC one season in high school; she was not very good at it.
Ah yes, this old chestnut. Remember when LRC used to do the same pointless thought experiment for Jeremy Wariner?
Hahah yeah, with 90% of knowledgeable posters believing it should be a cake-walk for him to run 1.43 based on him being able to "run the first lap in 50 because it would just be jogging" - I mean what's a 53 second quarter after you've "only jogged" one before it.
