A&M Freshman Sam Whitmarsh with a huge PR in the 800 prelims. has gone from 1:50 to 1:46 this year
A Freshman who ran 1:53 last year in High School, he was 2nd at the Texas State Meet.
Texas A&M's 800 Coach is incredible, Brazier, Miller, Mu, Fray, Watson and more
The current 800 coach has only been there a few years so he didn't even coach some of the runners that you mentioned.
Also, it helps a lot when you recruit the best high school 800 runners in the country. Brazier, Miller, Mu, and Watson were all superstars in high school well before they even got to Texas A&M.
I'm taking a lot of this from a thread on the T&FN Forums because they are also highights for me.
100W--Steiner, Ofili, Baylark, Stark 200W--Steiner & Ofili - hopefully this lives up to the billing 200M--Fahnbullah, Camel, Boling 100M--Fahnbullah, Camel, Ashe, Boling TJ-W--Moore & Hooper LJ-W--Hall, Moore, Acquah HJ-W--Distin & Glenn 110H--Edwards 1500W--Gear & Gregory 1500M--Kipsang 400H-W--Wilson, Hall, Glenn 10000W--Chelangat & Thorvaldson - I am really surprised that Arkansas is running a frosh in the 10. 400W--Charokee Young 3000SC-W--Kimeli, Jolly, Gear 5000M--Kipsang 5000W--Gregory & Chelangat PV-W--Gunnarsson 100H--Stark, Armstrong, Russell & Robinson
yea, that is something I noted in the "NC State Injuries" thread...Arkansas pushes their athletes hard...this should qualify Chelangat for regionals if she wants to do 10 vs 5 (or both) W800 has McDonald, Barret, Rose and more, W1500 has Vissa who if right can run with Gear and Gregory
After seeing video of the women's 200 qualifying heats, I am further convinced that Ofili will easily win the 200. Ofili was smooth as butter in the straight and Steiner was struggling. Ofili will go around 21.8 in the final and Steiner will be somewhere around 22.2-22.3.
The 100 heats are today but I will predict Baylark to actually pull an upset and win the final.
Ofili did look smooth. I think she's a smoother runner than Steiner. But I think back to Steiner's 22.35 in the -5.9 wind.....if she has a race like that left in her she will be tough to beat.
If conditions are right, we could see both women go under 22.

Look forward to what I hope will be a great race.
Steiner is maxed out. Her form will not allow her to get faster. Unless her form changes, we’ve seen her at her best already.
I talked to some people that were at the prelims last night and they thought that Steiner looked like she’s done for the season. She has none of the snap and looks totally different from when she ran the 10.92 coming from way back. Both said that they wouldn’t at all be surprised if Ofili beat Steiner be at least 1/2 of a second in the 200 final.
Ofili is going to obliterate Steiner in the 100 & 200 finals. I saw the 100 prelims tonight. Steiner was struggling and had terrible form. She was absolutely at her top end and turned in a 11.25. That’s a good time but I think that’s the best she can probably do at this point in the season.
Ofili, on the other hand, looked like she was jogging - almost like a Sunday morning stroll. Ofili turned in a 11.29 - only .04 off Steiner’s all-out effort. I would say Ofili was running at about 50%. It’s gonna be ugly and there’s a gonna be a new SEC sprint queen.
Womens 100- Steiner and Ofili top two times. 11.2; 11.3o
mens 100- Ashe top time 10.18
cold and a bit of a wind kept times higher than normal.
ofili and steiner look head and shoulders above everyone else for 100 and 200 tomorrow.
Steiner 11.25 Ofili 11.29 for a difference of .04. You tried to make it seem that Steiner ran a full tenth faster. Everyone knows you’re a Steiner homer but come on. After tomorrow you’ll see the the light.
Pretty sure whitmarsh ran 1:50 last year. He won texas 6a state as a sophomore the year before Covid in 1:51 but had a bad race his senior year and failed to make it back to repeat. Still very impressive to go from 1:50 to 1:46 as a true freshman
