To clarify, after the reset. I did focus on running by feel. Instead of aiming for any particular pace, I tried to run easy rest intervals and the reps at a pace I could sustain over the multiple sessions per week specified by the EIM. When I ran by feel like this, the 6x1000m session - the staple of the EIM - ended up with the reps right around 7:00/mile pace, or 20-30 seconds slower than my recent MP. If I wanted to keep going with the EIM, that's the workout I'd be doing multiple times per week, indefinitely. So the EIM doesn't specify 20-30 seconds/mile slower than MP, but that's the effect for me of having this workout and the other interval sessions scheduled multiple times per week.
Now, I'm not a big Daniels guy and I don't obsess about physiology or energy systems, but just spitballing it, 6x1000m at 7:00/mile with long rests looks like a totally useless workout for me.
Maybe in 10 or 20 years I'll be in a situation where I can only run 3 times per week. Maybe in that case I'll re-evaluate the EIM. But I'm not in a hurry to get to that moment.
