If there was no one else on the track, when doing mile repeats, I'd do two in one direction, then two in the opposite direction. If other people were around, I'd just play nice and stick to one direction.
When I run intervals on a grass field, I always switch directions at the mid point of the workout. It just makes feels right to do that. I'd do the same on the track if I was sure it would not interfere with anyone. What would be really cool is if there were a designated day of the week where it was acceptable worldwide to run clockwise on the track.
