dude they just took 30+ seconds off the national record, please consider going outside
Dude, they and their fan bois were marching around telling everyone they were going to all break 4. less talk and lot more humility would go a long way. if you’re going to ask for the spotlight, expect some crap when you don’t deliver.
American Fork ran 16:41 with a 4:26 leg.
This is one of the stupidest but, but, but’s on these board.
Newbury Park's lineup of Aaron Sahlman, Leo Young, Lex Young and Colin Sahlman ran the eight-fastest time in American history in the indoor 4xMile with 16:29.31, which broke the high school record by 32 seconds.
Milesplit has a post race interview with Sean Brosnan. He's not shy about putting times out there, like scaring 16:03, which he'd like to try at Penn. But that race only happens if Penn sets up an "Olympic Development 4 x mile." They do it for other relay events, but this would require some of the NY & Boston training groups to commit.
Many LR posters see this as boastful talk, but another way to look at it is his "no limits" philosophy. He wants his kids to run through psychological barriers.

Just the Sahlmans and Youngs. The other kids on the team are OK to have limits.
The splits from the results have them at 4:11, 4:07, 4:07, 4:04. Probably a disappointing race for them but obviously a great time. They can probably realistically aim for 16:10 outdoors. Anyways, it’s a high school all star team, so what do you expect? They all live over an hour from the school. Gotta hand it to the coach to get that kind of buyin from the kids.
Think of every excellent high school cross country or track team for the last 70+ years, no one came within 30 seconds of Newbury Park’s 16:29:30 today. Not mine, not yours, not the great 1974 Hammond, Indiana team with three sub 9:00 two milers, not any of Joe Newton’s excellent York teams, not any NXN winning team, not any national 4 x 1 national champion. Many colleges in 2022 run slower indoors, on or before March 12. Outdoor is coming and they are now only competing with themselves, on the high school level. They ran faster that the first four finishers in the mile in the same national meet today. Amazing.

this is fake news and youre smearing the character of those kids
I don’t think posters are criticizing the NP boys themselves — there were plenty of posters on here the last week claiming they could get close to 16:00 and making fun of those morons is warranted.
NP is awesome, even though I can’t stand Brosnan. Hope for the best for the boys outdoors.
They theoretically "lapped" the previous national indoor record.
Excellent point. No high school team ever came close to what they did yesterday. It’s still early in the season and they are a young group, with three juniors. They can likely improve on their time with a few more month’s training, as well as excel in other events. Between the World Championships here in the U.S., lots of great NCAA competitors, and high school excellence, 2022 should be an exciting outdoor track season.
Two observations from the bleachers seats after this weekend’s racing: 1. What makes NB’s top 4 an all-time phenomenon is that they have the two best sets of HS two-milers ever on the same team at the same time. All 4 may break 8:35 at Arcadia, going 1-4 against all comers. As milers, Colin appears the best this season by a clear margin, but the other boys are in the top 10-12 echelon or so. 2. The amount of hoopla and expectations these teens deal with on a regular basis is unprecedented for US distance running. Remarkably, they seem to remain grounded and affable throughout it all, but the pressure seemed to take a toll on the younger Sahlman this weekend (perhaps the most introverted of the four). 2. Even though a good deal of the ever-escalating expectations are self-imposed by them and their loquacious coach, one wonders how long they can hold up under the microscope before cracking a bit. Can’t imagine they’ll receive this much hype as collegians or pros. Hope it stays fun for them.

Brosnan gets a lot of flak but he's trying to strike a balance between having the kids not set limits but also making sure they're having fun. I noticed that in one of the post race interviews he was very complimentary about their performance and there was no woulda coulda shoulda. Lex Young mentioned maybe trying some Indian food. I'm sure Brosnan is very aware of the potential pressure they're under but the kids seem to be enjoying the process. They're a nice mix of personalities. I think the Young Bros really help Aaron Sahlman who seems a bit introverted and seems prone to nerves. The Young Bros. are super social and enjoy the camaraderie and interaction with other runners and fans.
