I was a little disappointed too, I’d expect a much faster closing 200m than 26 mid, but there was a lot of traffic and it was a nail biting race. The cream rose to the top, the best milers in the NCAA finished up front, and to me that gives the race validity.
Tactics are a valid part of racing. Your ability to think and make moves in the heat of competition are very important. You also need to keep yourself versatile through training various speed and energy systems, it’s why athletes like Coe were so successful. Winning a tactical race doesn’t mean you got lucky, it means you came prepared.
The LetsRun trope that a win shouldn’t count because it was a tactical race is ridiculous.
