Seems impossible for this guy to be able to do all of this crazy stuff on a treadmill by himself, and then somehow not improve or get worse during actual races.
It's because treadmill running is significantly easier, despite what some on here will say.
Seen it myself on strava. Guy uploads a 5k of 18 flat on the treadmill, but then runs 19:30 in an actual 5k race. Just lol.
I got down voted but I'm not lying, truth hurts I guess.
If it didn't identify me I would post the strava links. Seen it countless times - someone does 5 minute miles on the treadmill but then runs 19-21 minutes at parkrun - significantly slower. Anyone can be a treadmill hero but they always get their ass handed to them in a real world race.
Anybody else think this dude’s treadmill might be calibrated wrong? Lol. I mean if each mile is a few meters short that adds up.
Treadmill is perfectly flat, you can set the exact pace, you can set the thermostat to the perfect temperature, and there’s no wind. If you are used to running on a treadmill, it’s just as fast or faster than running outside. So it’s absolutely possible for someone of his ability.
Whether it’s smart to run that far and that hard in training is a different question entirely, and the answer is almost certainly no.
I agree treadmill running is easier. Ive ran some of my fastest times on the treadmill that weren't nearly as difficult as those same times on the road or track.

It's just a scientific fact that it is faster than running outside. No air resistance. Slightly less push off force because of the nature of the moving (and flexing belt). Still very impressive....but it would probably be about 10-15sec/mile slower outside at same work output (if heat is controlled etc)
perhaps at faster paces, but to me, 7:30 pace on the treadmill feels like I'm flying. Not sure if 6' and faster is easier comparatively speaking.
It's impressive, but at what cost. Unless its sort of a time trial effort 4-6 weeks out from a big race. Then that could make sense, but I think I'd rather just do a true tune up race instead.
But if this helps his contract maybe its worth it.
In addition to no air resistance and perfect temperature... treadmills can just be wrong. I assumed everyone had had this experience? Even the guys on Coffee Club said they know that one of their treadmills “runs slow” and the other “runs fast”.
Is it really that unlikely that the guys treadmill is off? It happens all the time, unless he’s using something extremely high quality (he may be). If you’ve listened to any interviews with CJ I’m not sure he seems like the kind of person who would notice...
If they posted their treadmill workout as indoor running, there is the chance that the distance their watch estimated is much longer than what the treadmill said, and thus made them a lot faster than they could have run.
His talent would have been better spent in a real marathon. As an injured runner I have discovered that stupid decisions like AJ made can get you hurt. A for the talent and F for the workout intelligence. Just plain dumb.
It’s not that treadmills “can” be wrong….they are for sure wrong, unless you have wheels for feet. People with bouncy strides get credit for horizontal movement for the vertical component of their stride. On real ground, they don’t. Picture Gabe Jennings and Paula Radcliffe running next to each other on two treadmills.
Jennings would closely match his real ground performance and Paula would do way better on the treadmill.

Yeah, If I'm doing a tempo workout on the treadmill, I'm setting the pace to be around my actual race pace for the distance I'm going. Much easier.
Is this the same guy who ran a faster treadmill marathon during his buildup for The Marathon Project than he ran at the actual race?
I'm not saying he's not a great runner, but we've seen this before and this doesn't really mean he's going to run a fast race. Just means he can run a little over a marathon at 5:10 pace on a treadmill, which is a 2:15 marathon. Maybe he's in 2:13 or 2:14 shape? I'd say his 2:11:49 7th place finish at the 2020 trials is still his best performance, that should be a 2:10 or 2:09 at Boston in nice weather. The trials course had 200 foot more elevation gain than Boston does and over 400 feet less downhill than Boston does, and it was incredibly windy at the trials.
