About the herd mentality, I think it more a matter of talent. Who wouldn't want to be a world class 800/1500/5K/10K track runner over being a marathon runner? Just read these boards and endless debates over kicks and last lap times. Sure, there is money in marathoning, but that doesn't make it any less boring an event. The marathon's current popularity is the cachet it can confer on the untalented.
Incidentally, Geb thought after leaving the track and moving up in distance that the pain and intensity from the constant surges made the 10K on the track so much more challenging than the marathon.
