here are some helpful historical FACTS about the history of Finland and Russia:
medieval: The Rus vikings develop and settle the waterways between the Baltic and Black Sea, mixing with the indigenous Finnic peoples. No such thing as "Finland"
next few hundred years: Rus-sia contends with Sweden for sphere of influence in lands between Novgorod and Stockholm. Still no "Finland." Swedish empire eventually holds sway over much of the west of what is now Finland, but cedes it all in the Russo-Swedish war of 1809.
Grand Duchy: As a fiefdom of the Russian empire, the Grand Duchy of Finland achieves many progressive reforms, such as its own parliament and women's suffrage. Early socialists were strong there and the bolsheviks met in Helsinki. In 1917, the Finnish socialists were the first in Russia to gain a parliamentary majority, but the Whites took over in a brutal crackdown and seceded after a civil war, presaging their future alliance with Nazi Germany.
Today, a Finn who crosses east into Russia can converse with a Karelian in basically their own language, but if they cross west into Sweden they speak their second language.
Face the fact that Finns are indelibly tied to Russia.
