First, I was shocked that he burned 2,347 calories over the close to 4 hour game. For someone his size, that's equivalent to running 15 miles or so. I guess one could briskly walk 15 miles and it would take around 4 hours. In football, the action for any one player, even with OT, is around 10 minutes (mainly because the clock keeps running between plays that end with a tackle in bounds). Let's be generous and say Mahomes saw 15 minutes of action. Outside of that, of course there's warmup before each half, walking up the field after a play, on and off the field, pacing on the sideline, getting up after tackles, etc. And during action the activity is very intense. Still, 2,300+ calories is much higher than I would expect. Thoughts?
The other point that stuck out is an average HR of 160 for the last 28 minutes. I know it was stressful with the lead changes but there's so much time waiting for kickoffs, a few minutes between regulation and OT, huddles, etc. I would think he'd spend half that time closer to 80 bpm. That would mean half the time at 240! Or half at 90 and half at 230. Still doesn't seem right.
What am I missing that makes the numbers in the story reasonable? Thanks.
The numbers are all complete garbage.
Kansas had the ball for 36 minutes of the entire game. The other 24 minutes Mahomes was either standing still or sitting.
A bare minimum of 50% of the other 36 minutes was walking back and forth between plays.
In the rosiest of scenarios Mahomes was actually playing football for 18 minutes.
In 18 minutes Kansas City ran 20 called run plays without Mahomes. This entails Mahomes taking the snap trotting 2 or 3 steps, handing the ball to a different guy and then putting his hands back in his hand warmer.
In no universe does a dude burn that many calories playing football for 10 minutes.
