Agree with this. I wish our FQB, Bernie Kosar, was as good as Montana.
I've got a story about Bernie as well. This one came from a Sports Illustrated article. I am in my mid 50's and going from memory so I may not have it 100% accurate.
Jim Kelly used to hast a huge barbeque each offseason at his ranch. Every NFL QB and their families were invited. The only thing they did beyond tell stories and joke around was a football accuracy contest. Jim had a tire hanging from a rope and each player tried their skill. I think they did 20 throws each. I don't remember the distance but most players got 4-5 through so it must've been a decent distance. But Bernie would get 15 or so. He would throw off the wrong foot, while falling down, on his knees,....and would still put them through and blow everyone away. The article quoted Kelly as saying Bernie's accuracy was incredible and all the others were spellbound watching him.
This has nothing to do with how good or bad he was as an NFL QB, just a fun story.
Bernie Kosar's problem was playing for a Cleveland team. Only Bron could shake that curse and even he had to tap out, twice.
I'm still bitter about Montana getting the best of Elway on Monday night as a Kansas City Chief. That game always makes lists of greatest NFL games in history.
Montana wasn't overrated and as far as I'm concerned, when you play well as a QB on two different teams it's all the more impressive, like Montana, Manning, Brady and Warner did.

Starr? Is this some kind of joke? As a long time Packers fan I can tell you Starr was maybe above average. Best of his era? Hilarious.
Should have said 60s-70: Bart Starr. He didn't play past '71 or '72.
His record holds up. Still has the highest postseason passer rating (104.8) of any quarterback in NFL history. Went 9–1 in the playoffs. Career completion percentage of 57.4 was an NFL best when he retired in 1972. Multiple league championships, two Super Bowl wins, a Super Bowl MVP, NFL MVP, led the league 5 times in passer rating. Yeah, just a little above average.
His last season was 1971 but bis productivity had already declined significantly after surgery. I would probably go with Stabach for the 1970s.
Between Montana and Brady there was Favre and Young.

I think that's fair.
I got:
60s: Starr
70s: Staubach
80s-90s: Montana
00s-today: Brady
Dino, I can't put Fran in there, sorry
As for Unitas vs. Starr, yeah, that's tough. Both great. Unitas had lot more attempts and so higher career totals. When I think GOAT though I look at post-season. Starr's passer rating is still all-time high. Unitas is far below, like 70 or so. GOATs elevate in the playoffs. Starr did it time and time again. So clutch. And I think he suffers from being in Lombardi's shadow. But, Starr called his own plays. Put the ball in his own hands and won arguably the most famous game in history (Ice Bowl). Take a close look at the Packers running game in some of those championship years. Not as good as people think. Starr was the difference.

Montana was an 80s QB. Injured in 91-92, played 2 seasons in KC then retired.
The 90s QBs were Steve Young, Troy Aikman, Brett Favre, Elway...
Alan
Montana is overrated. Bill Walsh was the star. Soon as Montana left, S. Young did awesome (Young had a dismal 60 passer rating his last TB year). When Young was out, J. Garcia was awesome- 30+ TD's. All 3 made the Pro Bowl with SF, & all 3 not nearly as good w/ other teams.
Montana had days to throw, WR's wide open, a great Bill Walsh system.
Wrong!
You ever see Montana play? Hr disected a defense like nobody else and it was cool to watch. He knew how to move the chains a master. Dude had a great understanding of what he was facing and .......touch. He lead Rice and Taylor, hit them in stride. Great great QB, seen them all since Johnny U, only Brady and Rodgers on the same level as Montana.

Reread my post. I DESCRIBED his play. Soon as he left, he was good only with KC, winning nothing.
Oh I know- When he went to KC was EXACTLY when he supposedly got old. And SF receivers open by 10 yards with perfect protection supposedly req'd greatness to complete passes to. Sure.
Montana had something broken in his back, 1987 season. By the time he went to Kansas City, he was about 37 years old. Thirty-seven was old then, especially post back surgery. He took a lot of hits. I don't know about wide open receivers. Montana did not have a good throwing arm. That's why he was a 4th rounder if I recall. Montana threw a lot of 3 yard, 5 yard and 8 yard passes, sometimes when receivers were well covered. Montana knew how to throw guys open. When a QB is throwing short passes, no one is wide open. Do know, Montana won two Superbowls before Jerry Rice got to the team. Steve Young, if I recall won no Superbowls without Jerry Rice. Didn't Young only win one Superbowl as a starter?

I see that others have given you the correction you needed.
In Montana's day, quarterbacks weren't treated like they might break into a million pieces. The league wasn't so pass happy.
Joe Montana was the best quarterback the NFL had ever seen until Tom Brady came along.

Yep, it goes like this...
1.Tom Brady
2.Joe Montana
3.Peyton Manning
4.Aaron Rodgers
5.Patrick Mahomes
6.Russell Wilson
7.Drew Brees
8.Brett Favre
9.Dan Marino
10.John Elway

Nope ! The 49ers took the lead against the
Bengals on Montana to FB Cooper in SB 16
and never trailed.
In SB 19 again 49ers took an early lead against
Marino and Dolphins and never trailed.
In SB 24 Again 49ers took the early lead and
never trailed enroute to a 55-10 rout of Elway
and the Broncos.
SB 23 was the only come from behind by Montana.
I still consider Montana the greatest QB,4 wins in
4 appearances and zero interception.

Mount Rushmore
Tom Brady
Joe Motana
Aaron Rodgers
Peyton Manning
Some sources indicate that Joe Montana high jumped 6’9 at age 15. He was not a running QB per se but he did rush for 1676 yards and 20 TD.

In today's league with today's rules, marino would be unstoppable. Ekway and Marino both should be higher. Fabre not on the list. All time int leader
People forget that Montana took the Chiefs to the AFC Championship game. He was knocked out with a concussion in the 3rd quarter. Ended up with their best season in 22 years.

Yeah, I'm not sure why people think he wasn't great with KC. He was old, but he was still very productive.
