Jesus, he did 151 miles the week of May 3-9 and 147 miles the week of July 19-25. Who does that at 61? Astonishing.

Re: Professor Tim DeGrado: That’s right he does a lot of mileage but I’m assuming it’s at quite a slow pace and following him on Strava I see that he does a lot of running on trails up and down mountains, sometimes for around 4 to 5 hours. .Maybe it’s almost like hiking. You can go hiking for hours on end and still feel OK but you can’t run on the roads for hours on end without suffering musculoskeletal damage. The guy is a radiology professor at one of the medical schools in Colorado so I assume he’s quite well aware of how his body reacts to stress.
Solid performance but difficult to put in context. You could have looked up and noted that Brian Pilcher set the 60-64 American record of 2:42:42 back in 2016 at Chicago. https://www.usatf.org/special-pages/usatf-american-records
Kiwi sheep farmer Derek Turnbull ran 2.41 at 65 and also a sub 5 min mile at 65.

In the 2021 USA track and field masters cross country over 60 race he came from far back in the early stages to finish second overall. He finished like a steam train. He is the master of pacing.

We ran that way as a team and finished 2nd, 3rd, and 7th. I won't take any credit for Tim's great running that day but I was the pacer or 6K of the 8K.
Charlie, are you saying that Tim is not that impressive because he ran 17 minutes slower than Tommy Hughes with his 2:30:02 at 60? I thought on Letsrun we try not to compare Americans to unreal foreign competitors?
Tommy Hughes ran 2:30:46 aged 61 at London marathon in October past.

Google his name and he is a professor at U of Col. He probably has a lot of leeway in scheduling his day.

I have a friend who ran 3:05 at NYCM at 64 on 5o to 60 mpw while driving school bus full time. This isn't that hard if you have the time to train and means to get well rested and get proper nutrition. I believe the key to competitive longevity is do some weight workouts to make up loss of muscle mass and don't gain fat weight.

+1 Yes, University professors are fortunate to be able to have a lot of autonomy in the way they work and typically they can schedule runs during the day which is a great benefit. The fact that he’s also in a very good salary range doesn’t hurt, so that he can get all the best equipment and medical help if required for injuries. He probably has a nice life. Kudos to that Boulder masters running team for doing so well in the national championships cross country. Who is Coyote Montana?
Is DeGrado sponsored? Do the masters runners from the Boulder running team get free gear?
Also, as Frank Shorter lives in Boulder, does he play any influence in this masters running team and is he familiar with them?

Would it be possible that your name is Roger Sayre or Mark Tatum? Just asking, and if you prefer to keep your privacy that is perfectly OK.
congratulations on a great run!
