I love how he tries to (and this is typical of runners) inflate his unofficial 4:02 mile from the summer by mentioning all the factors that were going against him:
at like 10 a.m. [*unamused laugh*]
Wow! So early in the morning.
at a random track
Which is so much different than a "non-random track."
At 10 a.m. with just Ari pacing me
Again, emphasizing 10 a.m., like that makes it more impressive.
His friend paced him just fine.
literally no race environment
A low-key time trial is the environment that most runners would prefer if going for time. And with a camera on you and a new team you're trying to impress, it's not like the adrenaline isn't there.

Totally this, though should be stated "he allowed Allie O to derail him." Because a narcissist like him would think with his ego/weiner in the short term over anything long term. With a name like Spencer, he's the anti-Quenton Cassidy.

He had this amazing opportunity - he could have turned his channel into a content platform for Brooks, featuring an Olympic medalist among others. But the person who most impresses Spencer Brown is none other than Spencer Brown.
It is so cringey to watch his videos now. He is so self absorbed and self important. I watch thinking, "How can this person so completely embarrass himself regularly?"
nail on the head
And that gf of his, misery loves company, I bet they are toxic for each other.
I do like coach dad, he should stick with that guy
I think he's way more of a 15/Miler than 800.
I know he loves to run 150/ 200m repeat workouts, but that's because he's lazy.
Hopefully his father will work on his aerobic engine.
Dude is a good guy, I wish him well. I think he has a real shot at running a 3:35-6 one day.

Anybody got any details on the “dark path” he went down in August?
Burnout/mental fatigue. Probably was legitimately depressed and wanted to quit running and go hide. Dark path is just a metaphor for the frustration/depression. Perhaps he started acting out in some way, shape, or form too?
Spencer's video felt like it was honest. I appreciated it.
Yeah this is my read on it too. He doesn't owe us an explanation but it can't be easy to try to compete at a high level in a very public way. I appreciated the video & think he's on the right track with his dad. His time at the Beasts could have gone very differently. He was keeping up in base building workouts when he first got there. If he would have stayed healthy & gone to altitude camp healthy, he probably would have been on his way to some outdoor PRs. I hope he stays with it & gets down to 1:46-47 & sub-3:40. Guys at that level impress me a ton because they stick with it to squeeze out marginal PBs that most likely won't win races or make teams.
I guess it's hard to make the level required to be a paid professional athlete. Who knew?

+1
It's hard to quantify or prove this, but notionally I agree. I'm sure she may have had some positive influences in reminding him to do some mobility stuff etc etc but equally I'm sure it was a distraction and potentially vice versa, could have been contributing to some of her injuries

Imagine "quitting" running and using your newfound free time to nitpick this kid's youtube videos at this level of detail. Is this what awaits all salty runners in retirement? Hope you're doing okay, Jamin.
Although I wouldn’t call it a misadventure. The team did end up with some medalist. So he understands where he’s at and what a success looks like, and the gap he needs to cover.
I don't watch much of his stuff. I'm a little bit older and not the typical audience for this stuff. But if there is cool training or racing incite it could be interesting. Unfortunately, one needs to sift through closeups of chewing, sticking the tongue out, etc... It's strange that professional youtubers still love closeups of that crap.
Anyway, I watch this video and give him some credit. He is a gifted runner. And he learned a lesson that it is best to train at YOUR level and improve rather than trying to train at someone else's level thinking that you will be faster by working out with faster runners. He now seems to be doing better because his dad is giving him appropriate workouts for him.
I do not understand why someone who has the opportunity to train with some world class athletes/Olympians would not go ALL IN. He (admittedly) half assed cross training. Eats like crap. Lacked focus and was not committed. Don't get it. Opportunity squandered.
Now lets be honest. There is a difference in talent between him and Allie O. Allie (though she has had her own challenges) is talented enough that she can bounce back from injury, cross train and be world class (or at least national class) whenever she is healthy. Spencer is not that talented. So if he does everything perfectly, he might run 3:56. For dreamers like most of us, that is pretty awesome. Why he didn't commit, I do not know. I think he is just immature. Hopefully his father's guidance will prove beneficial. Though, if he is still roaming and living like an undisciplined college/post college guy, I surmise his upside will not be too high.

To go armchair psychologist: fear of success
Takes a lot more effort to post videos weekly while traveling the country and trying to stay fit then troll and complain on a board. I appreciate the videos. Hope him and his crew pull it off for one last big push to pr.

I feel like Allie O and Spencer drag out the most immature parts of themselves when they're together and in front of the camera. I stopped watching his videos partly because I find the two of them kind of annoying.
I liked his channel when he was in college, but it really never seemed like he was focusing on being the best runner he could be when he was with the Beasts. Wish him the best of luck still.

My thoughts exactly. I think when he got to Seattle & met a similarly undersized, immature pro runner who also looks about 5 years younger than she actually is that he was just so f**king starstruck and in awe that he lost all ability to think straight, actually act his age, run fast, or refrain from burping during his d**n youtube videos. I swear to God about him like literally what the hell man

Running is a one man job, buddy. You watch too many Avengers movies or something?
The whole "his crew" thing is just immature antics. Takes 2 hours to run. Takes 2 hours to film and make the video. He could make a video every day if he wasn't so concerned about traveling the world in search of the best breakfast burrito.
