Some people would be morons if they think that. I remember Jakob wrecking the Gold and Silver Medalists in Florence running 12:48 in the process. Chep was obviously in better shape at the Olympics but I dont think a 12:58 is dropping Jakob, and I find it difficult to believe that Chep would outkick a 3:28 guy. Maybe the race plays out differently though, who knows
We're discussing 5000m correct? J. Ing. is not going to outkick anyone for 5000m Olympic or World Championship gold, 3:28.xx 1500m speed or not. Recall Matt Centro, 2016 Olympics 1500m final outkicked a few 1:42.xx or 1:43.xx guys, final 300m with his 1:44.62 800m p.b. Recall John Walker, 1976 Olympics 1500m final outkicked Rick Wohlhuter, 1:43.91 800m man & Ivo van Damme, 1:43.86 800m man even though Walker's 800m P.B., 1:44.92, final 300m. Btw., Wohlhuter was in perfect position final 300m.
I don’t understand how anyone can watch Jakob Ingebrigtsen take down a stacked field in Florence and then insist he wouldn’t be able to beat the exact same guys in a similar race at the Olympics.
Ingebrigtsen’s speed is vastly superior to that of any 5000m specialist. In a tactical race he will win every single time, but as we saw in Florence, he has the ability to win when the pace is hot as well. Like El Guerrouj, he has incredible strength for a 1500m specialist. There is no reason to believe he wouldn’t be successful over 5000m at the Olympic level.
We saw him lose in a 3k to Kiplimo. He got crushed. Why would he do better at 5k?
Stacked field? Where? Who was in Florence? Not Barega, not Kiplimo... and an off-day Cheptegei?
That race is old, kiplimo has not improved anything since 2020 while Jakob clearly have. This also wasn't a test of speed but rather strength, as the last lap was 56-57 seconds
Jakob made Barega look like a hobby jogger at the 3000m in Lausanne, he wouldn't stand a chance in Florence either

We’ve already seen him do better at 5k. The field he beat in Florence was as good as the one in Tokyo.
Kiplimo has improved. He set a couple world records this year
Yakob is not a speed based miler, hes a strength based miler but doesnt have anywhere near the strength that Kiplimo and Cheptegei have. And that 3000m race absolutely was both a test of speed and strength from the pov of athletes who specialize in distances longer than 5k and to whom the 3k represents their 4th best event.

El Guerrouj didn’t have the strength of Bekele but he could still beat him over 5k. Ingebrigtsen is never going to run 12:35, but he doesn’t have to. His strength is already superb for a 1500m specialist, and he is more than capable of running with the best in the world over 5000m, as we saw in Florence.
He improved 6 seconds in the half marathon from last year, which was a result of better pacing. Nobody cares about the 15k, but im shure he could do the same in 2020. The rest of 2021 was below expected with him barely getting a bronze at the olympics

You’re forgetting that Kiplimo soloed a 26:33 with a massive negative split in what is without question one of the best 10k performances ever (easily a sub-26:20 effort). He may have underperformed at the Olympics but he is still one of the best guys in the world right now.

El Guerrouj didn’t have the strength of Bekele but
Yakob is not El Gerrouj. Not even close. If you want to compare Cheptegei to Bekele, that's fair. Cheptegei has already improved on Bekeles records. But Yakob is nowhere near El Gerrouj, so there's no point in you bringing up what El G could do since there's no reason for anyone to believe Yakob could do the same right now.

Nowhere did I say that Ingebrigtsen is El Guerrouj.
The comparison I’m drawing between the two should be obvious as both are 1500m specialists with similar 5000m ability. El Guerrouj had a personal best of 12:50 and was never going to run 12:37, yet still beat Bekele. Likewise, Ingebrigtsen has run 12:48 and has no hope of ever running 12:35, yet he has beaten Cheptegei.
The point is that world record 5000m ability isn’t needed to compete with and even defeat the world record holder. You are under the impression that Ingebrigtsen doesn’t have the strength to compete with the likes of Cheptegei and Kiplimo which simply isn’t true.
Is actually pretty simple. Kiplimo will always have to run faster than 12:45 to beat Jakob.
Also, Jakob could switch his focus to 5000m altogether and then it becomes a 12:40 zone.

Facts are tough to nail down.
Think of this the next time someone says “fact”.
The Florence 5k had Cheptegei and Ahmed. Both who trounced Kiplimo in Tokyo.
Yup, and El G had "only" a 12:50 PB. Jakob is already at 12:48 after his first serious attempt.

Who was in Florence? 2/3 guys who beat Kiplimo to 5000m medals in Tokyo + Hagos and Jakob. Also guys like Balew and Knight who Kiplimo had to work to hold off on the last lap.
(Yes, Kiplimo was tired from the 10,000 in Tokyo just like Cheptegei and Ahmed who also doubled)
